Details:
To understand where his passion for music is rooted, one must go back circa 1977 when Zak, at the ripe age of four, was the recipient of a small ''paper'' drum kit from his parents. Right away people were amazed by how someone so small could keep a rhythm (and make so much noise), so after a few replaced paper heads, his parents purchased him a real five piece drum kit. It was at about this time, around the age of five, that Zak started taking piano lessons. Apart from his love of performance, the theory he learned in piano enabled him to start reading drum charts. Throughout elementary school Zak would play up to four hours of drums per day and by the third grade Zak was playing along to the songs of his idol, drummer Neil Peart of Rush. As the years progressed, so did Zak''s drumming ability and his love for musical experimentation.

In high school he added the realm of jazz drumming to his repertoire, having played to audiences at Toronto''s Roy Thompson Hall and with jazz legend Haygood Hardy. It was during this time that Zak made a name for himself in the Canadian music scene for his ability to play a very technical/complex style of drumming with a fluidity and feel rarely seen outside of the top of professional ranks. Coupled with the fact that he was still a teenager and that his energetic stage presence, which often included tossing his sticks well into the air during one of his greatly anticipated solos, brought life to all of his band-mates, Zak was singled out as someone destined to devote his life to music.

One night after a show touring Canada''s West coast, Zak pledged to learn the guitar or bass because they "had a lot less equipment to carry and setup for a show". After purchasing his first guitar, a 1977 Fender Strat from a school janitor, it only took him a matter of a few months to master enough of a guitar technique to allow him to play along to influences like Rush and Van Halen. From here, he started delving into instrumental guitar influences such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Dream Theater.

Inspired by the abilities of a close friend, Zak also started playing the bass and was soon the bassist in a jazz ensemble. As his skill progressed, Zak started pushing himself to learn the techniques and styles of many influential bass players such as Stu Hamm, Geddy Lee, Randy Coven, and Billy Sheehan. Always being interested in all aspects of music, Zak started to pick up other instruments like the sax, trumpet, trombone, and the upright bass, while further honing his percussion skills performing symphony work.

The next phase in his musical evolution was when he really started to concentrate on the art of composing. Through high school and university, Zak would record his own progressive instrumentals, plus a few songs with admittedly less than stellar vocal performances, on a portable four track. As music played less of a role in his life, while he was attaining his economics degree, his MBA degree and his law degree, he would pick up the guitar to play occasionally at parties to old Van Halen and other popular rock tunes.

Just as his business career really started to take shape, he had a chance conversation with a large Canadian recording artist over a drink after a Toronto Maple Leafs hockey game. This, in its own right, was a Turning Point. Not only had this artist somehow managed to expose Zak''s passion for music but he went out of his way to offer assistance if Zak decided he was really interested in giving music one more try.

Almost immediately, Zak put everything else in his life on hold. He re-entered the creative world of composing music, but this time he focused seriously on the lyrical component and really approached each song as a means of exploring some of the experiences, thoughts, and realizations that had shaped his own recent growth as a person.

In this way, Turning Point was written to illustrate some of life''s often forgotten lessons and to discuss experiences that touch every person''s values, emotions, and spirit. It was also created solely to satisfy his inner passion for music, independently, without any regard to potential commercial success or outside interests. By simply being able to listen to his musical ideas in a completed form in his car, Zak accomplished his personal goal. As more and more people started expressing their enjoyment with the music or their personal connection with certain lyrics, Zak decided to attempt to share his music with as many people as possible. This has also led to forming a touring band that will enable Zak to realize his final goal of expressing his music to others in a more personal setting.

In all, Zak says that he reached a level of accomplishment never before realized in business or school when he heard his first person singing along to his lyrics by memory. "I wanted to express things that I felt strongly about, experiences that had helped change many aspects of my life, and package it in a medium that brought happiness and enjoyment to people. Through experience I have learned that objectivity is a crucial mental trait, emotion should never be allowed to distort reality or one''s sense of rationality, and that you should learn from every experience in life, no matter how small, as everything does seem to happen for a reason." Listen to the variety of musical styles and lyrical experiences on Turning Point, and contemplate the passion that drove one person to create every idea, word, note, and sound in this musical journey.
