The Works are a high energy Rock ''n CholesteRoll unit from Amsterdam, featuring (ex-)members of Frites Modern, The Shining and The Anomalys.
"Best Served Rare", released this march on DonkeyPunch Records, marks their debut album.
Right from the opening anthem ''The Chandelier'' the tone is set. Knocked up girls, knocked out guys, spilled beers and flying barstools; an unapologetic celebration of weekend excess. ''I Wanna Date Your Mom'' tackles issues surrounding intergenerational love in the age of the internet. Another stand-out song is ''I Might Have Love Handles, But I Can''t Handle Love'' which deals with obesity and romance. Along the same lines is ''Chunky Chicks'' an exuberant ode to the female form. ''Gung Ho!'' on the other hand is a call to arms for bringing back balls, fun and grandeur to rock ''n roll, a genre nowadays plagued by pretentious, shoegazin'' metrosexuals playing nervous riffs and sporting confused haircuts.
The Works are indeed Gung Ho about rock ''n roll and with an unhealthy dose of humor and hedonism they want you to join in on the fun. Musically it''s a spicy sauce with the main ingredients consisting of proto-punk pioneered by The Dictators and The Stooges and irresistible hooks in the vein of The Fleshtones and Ramones. To top it off they''ve thrown in the occasional rootsy roadkill element, inspired by the likes of Nine Pound Hammer.
Just imagine tough guy character actors Lee Marvin and Warren Oates stumbling into CBGB''s around 1976 and initially getting into a fight with the glue sniffing cretins inside. But by the end of the night, with the whole place smashed to pieces, they''re somehow bonded by this strange ordeal and break into a sing-a-long. Throw in the influence of a digital society obsessed with sex and you''ve got what The Works are about. It''s not retro, it''s not metro, it''s just timeless, balls-out Rock ''n CholesteRoll!
