Details:
The guitar was not intended as an instrument that fulfilled only the role of melody in music. It is equipped, when played to it’s full potential, to hold three distinct functions, and at times, more. It provides bass, the rhythm accompaniment, and a lead melody, and even harmonies to that melody. It is a band for a musician who can''t find like-minded people to play with, or who doesn''t want to distort his musical vision with the influence of another.

I began studying Country Blues and the guitar stylings of my favorite Country Blues musicians because no other kind of music was sustaining me. I was looking for something that would floor me like when a child hears music for the very first time, or sees something they never knew existed. Looking into the world of the early bluesmen through their music is one of those flooring experiences. And listening to the scratchiest and rarest of 78s, thankfully collected by hardworking and generous purists, is something I enjoy more than almost anything.

Most people find it very aesthetically displeasing to listen to 78s therefore, as I like to put it, they can’t “hear in to” the recording, and achieve a mental and musical picture of what is going on in these early and most beautiful recordings. It always frustrated me that someone didn’t cover these old songs as accurately and authentically as possible, and re-record them for the world to hear until I found the few that did just that. Not for any reasons of gain, but rather for informing the public of what they were missing in this wealth of American music. In my performing repertoire I play many Country Blues covers by musicians like Blind Blake, Charley Patton, Blind Boy Fuller, Bo Carter, etc. And I try to do my part in paying back to the memory of these late geniuses.

My style is a combination of the many things I have listened to, learned from, and loved over the years. I wrote these songs in rather “authentic” Country Blues fashions. All the music, lyrics, and most importantly emotions are mine, but presented in a way that harkens back to the 1930s, as seen through my eyes and heard through my ears. I performed these songs as I would perform them live, but in this case in front of microphones. There are no recording tricks going on here. No autotune. I can say for certain because I recorded it all myself.

I have spent countless hours appreciating the company of the early bluesmen, listening and playing their songs. I suppose this record shows that. I am pleased to offer twelve original tracks that represent my longtime efforts. I’ll let the music explain what my words above cannot.

Cordially Yours,
Mark Galup
