Bio:
I''m going to cut the nonsense and write this bio in first person, despite my full knowledge that it should be in third. I''m such a rebel.
I was born in Montreal, but soon moved to Ontario where I grew up. Music was a huge part of my upbringing. My mother was a piano teacher, and my father was the "junior band leader" in the salvation army where I attended and acquired some skills learning to play euphonium, trumpet, and cornet (which is basically a small trumpet). I was always a music geek, attending music camps and excelling in music classes in school, though it wasn''t until high school that I realized I could incorporate my music talents into the daily teen-routine of trying to be cool. I acquired an electric guitar, bass, and drum kit, and played in tons of rock bands that never made it out of the garage, but a few musicians had a profound impact on me.
Firstly, a band that I played drums in called Feature Four, who taught me the importance of songwriting. We kept on a strict Beatles binge and worshiped every note they recorded. That band turned out to be a three year run, and some of the most memorable times in my life. Near the end of my high school career I began to play drums in the jazz program and met a guy named John Netherway. This guy could play the piano like no one I''d ever met, and he really introduced me to jazz, which led me to decide to study jazz after high school. After being rejected from the McGill music program (I totally wasn''t ready) I was left with a real feeling of being lost. I set out on a wandering journey that would take me not only all over Canada, but also to South East Asia, where I came to some serious life realizations. To make a long story slightly less-long, I had an experience in a remote Vietnamese village that, to me, solidified the importance of music.
So when I returned to Canada I continued to ramble in my own way, aimlessly driving around in my old Dodge Shadow, busking for gas money , visiting friends, and recording on an old four track whenever and where ever I had the chance. On one such trip I found myself in Red Deer, Alberta where I met producer/engineer Terry Tran, and began recording with him here and there. Eventually I moved to Edmonton and enlisted in the Grant MacEwan music program, where I studied the drums and graduated with diplomas in Jazz Performance and Composition.
All that time I''d been writing material and inevitably a band was formed. I teamed up with musicians Stephen Tchir, who seemed to share my interest in learning to play every instrument known to man, Michelle Sabourin, who perked my interest in traditional fiddle music, and Stephen Badach, a left handed bass player with a solid feel and abnormally long thumbs. Together we recorded our debut self-titled album ''bramwell and the left overs'' at Edmonton studio, Riverdale Recorders with old friend/engineer/producer Terry Tran. Eventually we recruited a drummer friend of mine, Sean MacIntosh, and the line up was set.
We continued to play around town, from the Blackdog to the Winspear and set out on a small tour this past summer going as far as St. Catharines, ON, playing in the SCENE festival. We''ve managed to get college radio play, charting in the top 30 in a few different stations, including Edmonton''s CKUA, Lethbridge''s CKXU, and Kamloop''s CFBX, and have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with such artists as Buck 65, Bob Wiseman, Courtney Wing, Trevor Tchir, Five O''Clock Charlie, Elliot Brood, Theresa Sokyrka, Hobotron and Clint Peltier to name a few. We''re hoping to record our second album in early 2006 and aiming for a summer release. In the mean time, I''ll be writing and dreaming. ~Bramwell Park~
