Teo''s Biography
Teo was born in the Puglian province of Foggia in San Marco in Lamis on the 28th of December 1960. He now lives in Bologna where he works putting on concerts, teaching and promoting artistic events.
A graduate from the faculty of Fine Art, Dance, Music and Theatre (DAMS) at the University of Bologna, with a thesis analysing the stylistics of jazz in the 1950s and 60s, he has hosted seminars on jazz improvisation at various public institutions; University of Siena, the Koblenz conservatoire, the “O Vecchi” music college in Modena, the municipality of Bologna, as well as in various private institutions.
In 2007 he successfully completed his thesis on the American jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, obtaining his masters music degree specialising in jazz piano at the ‘Buzzolla’ conservatorio in Adria.
Teo has been teaching jazz piano at the Convervatorio ‘Frescobaldi’ in Ferrara since 2006, and since 2007, he has been teching jazz piano at the Conservatorio ‘https://www.tradebit.comtini’ in Bologna.
From 1985-2000 Teo taught music alternately at 9 different secondary schools in both Foggia down in Puglia as well as in Bologna.
Teo has played concerts with famous jazz musicians such as Gerry Mulligan, Eddie Gomez, David Sanchez, Jeff Berlin, Luis Bonilla, Lou Fisher, Roch Peckman, Gary Keller, Matt Marvuglio, Jim Snidero, Jimmy Rivera, Fidel Morales, Efrain Martinez, Paolo Fresu, Marco Pignataro, Hiram Bullock, Greg Yasinisky, Antonello Salis, Cheryl Porter, Roy Paci, Fabrizio Bosso, Dhafer Youssef, Daniele Scannapieco, Stefano Di Battista, Henghel Gualdi, Gianluca Petrella, Mauro Ottolini, Piergiorgio Farina, Paolo Damiani, the Doctor Dixie Jazz Band, singer Ruggero Raimondi, flautists Giorgio Zagnoni and Andrea Griminelli, poets Davide Rondoni and Roberto Mussapi and actors Enzo Moscato and Piera degli Esposti. He has collaborated on recordings and tours with important italian artists such as Lucio Dalla, Renzo Arbore, Pupi Avati, Claudio Baglioni, Paolo Conte, Vinicio Capossela, David Riondino, Francesco Baccini, Alfio Antico and Roberto Freak Antoni.
He has toured with theatre companies and composed music for theatre productions by actors Paolo Rossi (‘Milanon Milanin’, ‘Canzonacce’), Antonio Albanese (‘Psicoparty’) ed Enrico Bertolino (‘Lampi Accecanti di Ovvietà’).
He has taken part in television and radio programmes on Rai and Mediaset Channels. He made a weekly appearance on the variety show ‘Mai Dire Goal’, also appearing on Italio Uno as well as appearances in the first few years of the ‘Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo trio’. In May 2003 he was musical director and composer for the ‘Superstar’ programme on Rai 2. He has performed in various international jazz arts festivals such as Umbria Jazz (fourth edition), Urbino Jazz, Le Grande Parade Du Jazz de Nice, Festival Jazz de Samois-Fontainebleau, Comacchio Jazz, Festival de Rouen, Festival Jazz del Monferrato, Festival Jazz di S .Marino, Fano Jazz, Bologna Jazz Festival, Maratona Jazz Modena, Emilia Romagna Festival, Koblenz Festival, Marajazz, Suoni in Cava, Jazz in Lamis, Orsara Jazz, CMPR Jazz Festival in Puertorico etc...
He has recorded over 50 CDs, three of which as band leader: “Halfway”, a trio recording which took place at Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia, “Prendiamociunapausa” with Paolo Fresu, Cheryl Porter and Henghel Gualdi and “Teo Ciavarella and Friends”, recorded live in the Aula Absidale S. Lucia at Bologna University and in the Beethoven Haus in Koblenz, during a tour in Germany with the Romanian clarinettist Romeo Tudorache with the Opera String Quartet from Berlin. The recording contains original material written for the tour, arrangements of celebrated movie soundtracks and reworkings of popular melodies from the Gargano province of Puglia.
He has composed original music for the shows ‘La Montagna Incantata’ (Orsara Jazz), The Land of Manfred” (at the ‘Festambiente’ festival in Gargano), “Cantico dei Cantici” (at the Theatre of Faenza).
He has hosted many concerts with Joyce Yuille, Kay Foster Jackson, Maurizio Minardi, Will Robertson, Flavio Piscopo, Felice Del Gaudio, Lele Barbieri, Lara Luppi, Beppe D’Onghia, Guglielmo Pagnozzi, Lele Veronesi, Stefania Tschantret, Antonio Marangolo, Massimo Manzi, Carlo Maver, Guido Torelli, Rita Botto, Enzo Cavalli, Sal Rosselli, Alan King, Vince Vallicelli, Guido Guidoboni, Sandro Comini, Checco Coniglio, Tom Sheret, Massimo Zanotti, Andrea Ferrario, Emiliano Rodriguez, Paolo Benedetti, Andrea Burani, Sonia Peana, James Thompson, Andrea Taravelli, Rossella Graziani, Vann Washington, Roberto Manuzzi, Barend Middelhoff, Christian Lisi, Francesco Lomagistro, Morgana Montermini, Giovanna Lombardo, Patrizia Lomuscio, Patrizia Deitos, the Enescu Quartet from Paris, the New Scarlatti Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of Messina and the Symphony Orchestra of Tirana.
He has also directed the String Orchestra of Bologna and the Umberto Giordano Symphony Orchestra of Foggia.
In 2001 he was awarded an honourary recognition from the DAMS faculty at Bologna University as part of the 30th birthday celebration of the DAMS degree in Bologna. At an award hosted by ANT Italia he received the ‘Live Jazz for Life’ award for 2003.
Alongside his busy concert schedule, Teo is involved in musical and artistic promotion and management. Both in 2001 and 2002 he directed and presented the ‘Jazz in Baraccano’ festival, and in 2002 ‘Jazz and University’ at the Cantina Bentivoglio jazz club in Bologna. He curated the ‘Kelly Joyce Live’ and ‘Gino Paoli in Jazz’ shows, both arranging and hosting the concerts with both artists.
In 2001 he established the Dams Jazz Orchestra together with Paolo Granata which is now the official jazz orchestra of Bologna University. The group has evolved in the Alma Jazz Orchestra, and in total has a pool of over a 100 alternating musicians. He is also artistic dirfector of ‘Alma Entertainment’, a culural association that promites musical events and at Bologna University such as ‘Alma Jazz’, the international university big band festival and also set up ‘Jazz Monday’ at the Scuderia bar on Piazza Verdi which has since changed venues to Bar Wolf on Via Masserenti, Bologna.
He directed the ‘From the Appenines to the Bands’ festival in Castiglione dei Pepoli in 2006, he was the artistic director of the ‘Sounds from the Mines’ festival in Puglia and today he is the honourary president of the ‘Jazz in Lamis’ festival in Gargano.
