Damn, is the CD over already?
I''m going to be heaping a good deal of praise on this one, so those of you who don''t care about that sort of thing may want to go ahead and move on to another section of my site. Seriously. I mean it. Don''t say I didn''t warn you.
Okay, now we can get on with it. The Captain T Band is a bit hard to describe due to the amount of secrecy surrounding the group. Don''t look at me that way, just head over to their site and you''ll see what I mean. :) The strange little mythos surrounding this group puts in a similar quirky group as Marilyn Manson and Ozzy Osbourne in terms of public image (although I enjoyed Captain T''s quite a bit more then the other two).
The music itself is an inbred mutt of grunge, metal, 70''s psychedelic, dance grooves, and a vocal style that somehow manages to compliment them all. You won''t really hear anything new hear. What you''ll hear is old ideas presented in a new way. A juxtaposition (I love that world) of old and new. Even the bits that don''t bring anything new to the table are great to listen to because of the energy this band puts into it''s music. I usually comment on the individual musicians but there''s really no need. Everyone involved here is in top form.
I can only imagine how this band must sound live. If you''re in the New York area do yourself a favor and find this band. Oh, woh is me, if only this album were more then just 3 songs.. With any luck my order with https://www.tradebit.com of their first album won''t take too long to get here. :)
Selected Songs:
Manifest Destiny - What a great opening song. There is a real heavy 70''s acid rock vibe going on in this song and I love it. The guitar itself has this nasty, crackling, crunchy distortion that sounds fantastic. Only problem I had was with the vocals bring a bit "sharp". I don''t know if their too forward in the mix, or if maybe all they need is a little EQing. This is probably my favorite song on this CD, with a chorus that grabs you from the start and drags you right along with it. Speaking of the chorus, there was a nice low vocal, very subtle in the mix, that complimented the sound nicely.
Dishonest - More of a punk rock flavor going with this one, and maybe the least inventive of the titles on this disc. At least, it is until around the 2:30 mark when it leaps into hyper video game/cartoon music. It doesn''t last too long before launching back into the verse/chorus structure the song starts with, but man is it a nice little "intermission".
Interplanetary Disgrace - This one takes quite a long time to get started (it doesn''t really kick into anything until around the 1:30 mark). Until then it''s just some odd "scraped string" sounds on the guitar which give it an odd "cheesy sci-fi movie" sort of feel.. This theme is built upon and built open in some bizarre textures reminiscent of Floyd and other experimental musicians. Around 4:30 it kicks into a simple metal riff (nice groove). There are some definite hints of Rush here in the epic songwriting style (this song clocks in at 16:52), only not as tightly constructed. There''s some nice 70''s riffing that goes on around 7:20 that leads into some fantastic guitar solo work at 8:30. Some nice textured landscape comes in at around 11:00. Visions of Pink Floyd and Rush dancing in my head, only with an edge I can''t quite put my finger on... This builds into a nice subtle groove with a solid vocal line that builds into a nice tight groove (I loved the drum/bass interplay at the 16:00 mark and on...). This song takes a lot of stamina to listen to, but is a great tune to zone out to.

This may sound weird, but I''m not entirely sure who is or is not in this band.. I''ll just chalk that up to the mysterious nature of the group I guess. :) There''s some folks listed on their website. Maybe that''s a start!
