Biography
Sandy Chochinov is an original creation. He has always stayed true to his convictions and ideas. He is a man whose roots started in many basements in Winnipeg. From first hearing the Beatles, and then slowly being turned on to Muddy Waters and all the other great Chicago blues bands. It wasn''t long before Bitches Brew by Miles Davis was constantly being played on his turntable. I don''t think Sandy ever looked back.
Through the 70s Sandy honed his chops on the electric bass with a local blues band called Mojo and the Nighthawks. In 1975 after brief time in Edmonton Sandy moved to Toronto where he lived and worked playing with such notable people as Dianne Heatherington and Ian Thomas. All through this period Sandy began doing a lot of writing with a band called Panama, which included Leonard Shaw, Gary Taylor, Ron Reid and Craig Kaleal. The band played a high-energy fusion of original material and music of Weather Report and other fusion bands.
Sandy moved back to Winnipeg in 1988 where he continued to play and record actively in the Winnipeg music scene. Playing with Ellen Mcilwaine and briefly in an original rock band called Rustle the Fish where he contributed material for the group. In 1994 to 1996 Sandy found himself back in Toronto in a project with Gary Taylor called the New Millennium Orchestra, which included musicians, Jim Hillman and Kevin Breit. He also worked in a blue grass jazz band called Act ''uv Dawg where he contributed a song on their CD called Sandy''s Tune, that still gets played on CBC radio in Toronto.
The last seven years for Sandy has been spent in Winnipeg writing music. The last four months which have been a labor of love, have been spent on an instrumental album. The album is an accumulation of many of Sandy''s influences ranging from Miles Davis, Weather Report and Jaco Pastorius to name a few.
Sandy has continued to evolve and grow musically. He has a melodic sound all his own as his friend Gary Taylor describes as quirky. So here is Sandy up-to-date and uncompromising on his first CD, I Wouldn''t Change A Thing.
