In fall 2004, David Alan Webb published his first CD of original music, Migration. The neo-classical or soundscape type music is soothing and restful, good for waking up, going to sleep, or just relaxing ambience. Its instrumentation ranges from a simple quartet of flute, French horn, violin, and cello to full orchestration with choir and pipe organ. The performances are all computer-simulations of his compositions, and David observes that "a real music connoisseur can certainly tell, but in these days of electronic music, it''s quite acceptable and enjoyable."
David grew up with a piano and has been involved in music all his life. He is known by his friends for his relaxing keyboard improvisations, but aside from some contemporary Christian pieces for local churches, he did no serious composing until the year he was reconciled to the Catholic Church at age 44.
"I became convinced that the creation is God''s art, a self-revelation of God the Master Artist, and that reality is given substance by its meaning. Life is sacred only because it is His art, and if we are not art, then we are all just machines. As a devout and lifelong Protestant, it came as quite a shock to discover that I had inadvertently become sacramental and therefore Catholic." Written mostly during the winter of 2004, Migration is a musical expression of his own time of migration into the Church. The last number, Liturgy Journey, is an interpretation of the Easter Vigil when he was confirmed. "The Church has always recognized art as a critical human activity, rooted in the supreme ''Art'' of the incarnation, God''s Son, Jesus Christ. The liturgy itself is essentially participatory art."
If David''s religious journey is unusual, this CD contains many examples of another of his peculiarities--a literally odd sense of rhythm. Two of the pieces--''Grieving'' and ''Lullaby Roost''-are entirely in seven, and many numbers have sections in five and seven. "I am continually surprised at my own improvisations, feeling more like a spectator than a composer. When I try to write down a melody, I am often surprised to find that it''s in an odd meter. My seventh-grade teacher told the class once that I ''march to the beat of a different drummer.'' She didn''t know how right she was."
David''s music mirrors his life in yet another way. "The concept of complimentary text and context, or foreground and background, is very important to me. A lot of my melodies cannot really be fully heard apart from the harmonies that support them. The music is two-dimensional in the sense that both melody and harmony are required." For this reason, David says that even he often has trouble remembering his melodies, and some of his music has an other-worldly quality and a sense of bigness that you can get lost in.
David is currently working on another more playful project that will bring animals and animal stories to life using classical instruments. "I hope to demonstrate to young and old how music without words can paint pictures and tell stories."
