MP3 India - On 17 Foxstreet

Songs sung into your ear so softly and closely you think you can feel the breath on you skin. German born India Turner makes an emotional, yet spare mix, called Milk & Honey music. A bit like Norah Jones. Post-modern, post-folk, post-jazz meta music.

6 MP3 Songs
POP: Delicate, FOLK: Folk Blues

The three things I love the most:
Music
People
Togetherness

Three lovely things coming together when
a) people listen to what I record and feel lovely with it
b) I play a show

Writing this bio was an unexpected walk down memory lane, or in other words, it was: India Turner, The REALY Early Years. Aged three being sent to my room because I wouldn''t open my mouth to sing, and that same year discovering what applause feels like at The Tabernak (the name finally came back to me). Being shown the Staple Singers. I loved those voices. This was much better than the arias earlier (you see why I refused to sing). I realized for the first time just what an unusual and unorthodox teacher I had. Here was a German Opera Singer who was training her daughter by playing her Gospel records. What guts. And thank god. I do love opera intensely, Dawn Upshaw, how much better can it get?...but nothing feels more connected than expressing those deep down feelings in the cadence of Gospel and Soul and Blues. Perfect vehicles for this mysterious thing called passion. Though CBS Records thought otherwise. I have a string of pop singles, with my name on them, to prove it.

I began to take songwriting seriously when I heard Leonard Cohen. A beautiful man, Peter. on whom I had an earnest crush, introduced us. Being German speaking, I don''t know how I grasped this artist. It''s a testament to the universality of music. For years I sang one of his lyrics in which he mentioned a hard-on. I never got that one until I moved here. Wow.

America was a total culture shock. Total because unexpected (Germany is very Americanized). Everything was large. Parking lots, appetites (literal and figurative), friendliness, indifference, opportunity, freedom, commercialism. It was quite the journey to make sense of this place. I hated the slick musical productions, but was overjoyed when alternative music came in and saved the day for a while. In the meantime plenty of interesting projects (and a number of subsequent releases) for which I wrote, produced and performed came along to aide the process of discovery, which is one of America''s birthrights. Here we can find ourselves.

So, now that I''ve moved to Seattle I finally know where everything is. My head, for one. I can touch my ears, just like that. And I know who it is when I see my eyes in the mirror. When I hear my voice I just like it. No criticism. I can say wow, that''s me, I''m found! That''s Seattle for you: No. 1 delicious city. Rain notwithstanding. And it has the monorail, which I love. I see it whiz by when I''m down at the Bella on 5th. It''s Thee listening room in Seattle. I do the booking, play the occasional show. My nonprofit, https://www.tradebit.com, puts on a monthly showcase in support of artists who want to make a difference.

All this happiness (yes, there''s a super-duper boyfriend, taking all the pictures for my web site) needs some place to go, which is right onto a G4 PowerBook via a Mini-Me and a 002 Digidesign. A new CD is forthcoming. Oh Protools, how I love thee...Oh, I shouldn''t close without mentioning my adored Tele, SweetGirl. I love it because it sounds so acoustic. But let me tell you, it plays as smooth as only an electric can. Yes, I''m a Mad-For-Telecaster fan.

Now that you know a little something about me I hope you get my CD, come visit my web site, or come to a show if you live in Seattle. I''ll be glad to hear from you, too. Do check out https://www.tradebit.com. Our slogan is either: Use Your Powers to make a Difference, or Use Your Powers for Good. I never can decide if it should be funny or serious. But I know I AM very serious about contributing the best of me I have to offer. I''m looking forward to the opportunity.

Thank you for your time.
