Laveria was born in Wichita, Kansas, and resided permanently in New Haven, Connecticut at a very early age. At ten years old, Laveria joined a local gospel group, Willie Smalls and the W.S. Singers and performed along with such artists as Walter Hawkins & the Family, and Shirley Caesar. At the age of 12, she toured a month in Europe performing with the Carol Antrum Ensemble for "Maranatha" World Christian Outreach. Winning all three major talent competitions in high school, in her senior year she was offered a contract with Motown Records, but had to turn down to finish her education. She attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she won the Eight Annual Talent Show Competition, catching the eye of Dr. Nathan Carter, and was recruited into the Morgan State University Choir, performing with Patti Labelle, Stevie Wonder, Deneice Williams, Issac Hayes.

While in Maryland, she won Baltimore''s Best competition for Best Female Artist, the V103 Star Search Competition, and the "Budweiser Showdown" Music Competition. She also performed as a solo artist for Kwesi Mfume, Jessie Jackson and Bishop Tutu. She appeared with the MSU Band and performed half time at the Meadowlands for the Buffalo Bills/NY Giants Game. Returning home, she auditioned for the Apollo Theater in New York, performed and won Amateur Night At The Apollo nine times then went on to "Showtime at the Apollo" and won five times. Meeting Play, from the duo "Kid N Play, he became her manager, and she performed on the Movie Soundtrack "House Party 3" singing the song "I just love the man," also doing the intro song to the TV Pilot for Kid N Play "The Bodyguards." Coming back into the roots of Gospel, she toured with Legendary Tramaine Hawkins completing her Grammy award winning album/video "Tramaine Hawkins Live" and won Connecticut''s Best Female Vocalist for 1990 and 2000.
