Philadelphia-based Constant Recourse combines elements of rock and electronic styles with thoughtful and well-crafted lyrics, melodies, and harmonies to form a balanced Rock/Pop sound. The band’s music has been compared with the harmonious sounds of Ben Folds and the rock sound of Switchfoot. Formed in early 2006, Constant Recourse includes Ben Mell, guitar and lead vocals; Jessica Mell, vocals; Matt Gore, keyboard; Luke Patterson, drums; and Zack Groff, electric guitar.
The members of the band, excluding Jessica, met and decided to form Constant Recourse while playing together in their church’s praise team. Ben, who had originally met Jessica in high school, reconnected with her while they were in college. He invited her to join the band in the summer of 2006. In March 2008, Ben and Jessica married. The age range among the five members spans 9 years. The youngest member, Zack, is 19 and still in high school; the oldest member of the band is Matt at 28, who teaches piano and attends Westminster Theological Seminary. Embracing this variety, the band uses it to their advantage to appeal to a wide audience.
Constant Recourse has been very active in its three years of existence. In May 2006, the band was selected in the nationwide Band With A Mission Competition and showcased at Nashville’s Rocketown. The band then released its first album, Something Brighter, in July 2006 and played shows locally through the fall to promote it. The following year, Constant Recourse participated in the 2007 Emergenza International Music Competition and finished in 5th place among the 180 participating bands in the Philadelphia area. Immediately following Emergenza, the band played venues in the summer 2007 Extreme Tour, which took them as far West as New Mexico.
Recently, one song from their new album, “Nothing to Live For,” was featured on a special edition compilation album called “Philly Rockers For Life” featuring 25 local Philadelphia bands. Constant Recourse continues to worship where they started on Sunday Nights at Manoa Presbyterian Church in Havertown. They have continued to play more locally, and have appreciated a warm welcome by members of the Philadelphia church community.
REMAIN is an insightful album of original songs written, produced and recorded by Ben Mell at Manoa’s Studio just west of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Chris Athens at Sterling Sound in New York mastered the album. Constant Recourse has been compared with Switchfoot, Ben Folds and Mutemath because they integrate rock and electronic elements with thoughtful lyrics and a solid beat. This sophomore album walks its listener from a desperately sick disposition to a place of contentment in God, and ends with a challenge to remain both in His love and in Christian community.
The first and last songs are bookends to this story. Still I Need, the first song, openly admits to the conviction of conscience. It asks that God would be strong enough to change our terrible, inescapable self-centeredness. Nightly Amnesia, the last song, relays a God-given answer to that state: remain and abide in His love. Everything between these tracks is a transition from acknowledging need, to having that need met and finally remaining in Him, God, who satisfies and shows Himself to be greater than our need.
God Save Us All, Convince Myself and Hold On develop a need for help that can rescue, not just aid, a deceived person. That rescuing cannot come from one’s self because as Convince Myself states, “I cannot forget I convince myself of anything if I try hard enough”. Where Are You, Exposed, Love Me First and Make Me Strong take us through a process of being open and admittedly broken so that strength can be found in a love that is simply given, not earned. “This is love, not that I loved you (God)… but you loved me before I could say I’m worth your time… before I could prove myself to you”. God’s love must be received in order for a person to be restored.
Washed, Less Bitter and Nothing to Live For start to explore what it’s like to live in the freedom that flows from receiving God’s love. Washed describes the foreignness of a clean slate and the necessity of living in awe and joy. Less Bitter and Nothing to Live For are about letting one’s own experience speak as much as it can and entrusting other people to God. Finally, Nightly Amnesia speaks of a tendency to forget—and the fight to regularly remember—God and what He has done. The goal proclaimed in the first song, to be consumed by God “until I in [Him] remain”, has resurfaced: Remain in His love.
