Andi Starr is a traveler of the inner world. Often compared to Tori Amos, early Jewel, or Azure Ray, Starr’s gift is in turning difficult subject matter into heartfelt, sometimes haunting, and always beautiful compositions. A recent review in Culturespill Magazine states: “Andi Starr hits the right notes: the notes that hurt, the notes that know you, the notes that make you meet yourself.”
After several years of working by day, Starr decided in 2006 to pursue her music full time, and with immediate impact. In 2007, Leaving the White Line (Starr’s fourth release) garnered immediate regional and national attention. Along with a featured article on the front page of The Oregonian’s Living section (January 26, 2007), Starr was twice featured on Portland, Oregon’s KINK (101.9 FM) radio show, Local Music Spotlight. Additionally, KMTT (103.7 FM, The Mountain) in Seattle featured Starr on their Chill Program and Sunday Brunch Program and chose “Save Yourself,” the second track on the album, for their New Music Sampler (10,000 distribution).
Of her many honors and awards—including nationally successful college and Triple-A radio campaigns, reviews in recognized national publications (Amplifier Magazine, among others), a top-selling album on CDBaby (first and foremost online music store for independent artists), and sold-out performances at some of the premier venues in Portland—there are a few honors that hit closer to home for Starr and her mission. The first of these include Climb for Life, a documentary about a group of men and women living with HIV/AIDS and hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro, for which two of Starr’s songs were chosen for the soundtrack. For years as a therapist, Starr worked closely with the gay population. Needless to say, Starr was ecstatic to have her songs chosen for this documentary. Additionally, in 2005, Starr’s song “Supergirl” was chosen for a national video in tribute to Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a marine who was killed in Iraq. Unfortunately, the promised national release of this video was indefinitely postponed due to Hurricane Katrina. (The video was eventually released on YouTube.) Finally, Starr was twice chosen for a live performance and interview for WomenSoul night (KBOO, 90.7 FM, Portland, Oregon), a community radio program highlighting women actively living their art in the world.
Notes on "New Warm World":
After a regional summer tour in support of her radio campaign and release of Leaving the White Line, Starr packed up all her belongings in her van (with a partner and a cat) and headed to southern California where she has spent the last year creating, arranging and producing her fifth album, New Warm World. About this move from Portland, Oregon to California, Barbara Mitchell, staff writer for The Portland Tribune, wrote: “While L.A. might be overrun by aspiring hopefuls and Midwestern refugees, Starr should have no problem quickly distancing herself from the competition—her clear, lovely voice and clean, lean folk-pop instincts mark her as a career artist and not just another flash in the pan.”
Recorded almost entirely in her garage, Starr plays most everything on the album, including keyboard, organ, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, and percussion on New Warm World, which in many ways is a return to her roots, particularly her upbringing as a classically trained pianist---listen to songs "Go to the Ocean" and "Crow." Additionally, in an effort to capture the raw intensity of her live performances, several songs are recorded live, and in some instances in one or two takes---listen to songs "Under the Same Sky" and "Rebel Sky (Night Version). The title, however, also suggests a new opening for Starr. Characteristically melodic and hauntingly beautiful as her music and vocals have been described in the past, this album also radiates warmth and light, and is more personal in nature. Herein is the voice of a mature woman in a different place, a new warm world, truly in her element.
Special guests include Chris Donohue (bassist for Emmy Lou Harris) and Aaron Plunkett (hand drums for the movie "The Titantic"). Also to be found here are cameo appearances of cello & sax, inlcuding John Altyn on guitar and baritone, Lee Scrivner on djembe, Mark Hashimoto on bass, and Starr''s Portland bandmates, Madison Christine, Nicolas Hall, and Gregg "3g" Hardy on "She''s So Sweet''.
