Biography

What sets the Dan Zemelman Quartet apart from other jazz groups is their ability to play creative and intricate music without losing the groove/feeling or depth of emotion. Every member listens and responds with intelligence, humor, originality and character.

With a nearly packed audience and highly successful CD release party at Yoshi''s - Oakland, one of the top jazz clubs in the country, this ensemble is beginning to make its mark in the jazz world.

They met in many different formats with various pioneers of the San Francisco jazz scene. Collaborations have occurred in the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, the Fred Randolph Quintet, the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra (from Jazz at Pearl’s), Adam Theis’s Realistic Orchestra and many more.

Members of the DZ Quartet have played/toured with some very outstanding musical acts. Erik Jekabson toured with John Mayer and the band Galactica, Alan Hall has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Harris and Billy Childs, Fred Randolph has performed with Larry Dunlap and Frank Martin, and Dan Zemelman has recorded on John Lee Hooker’s last CD and performed with Will Bernard and Benny Rietveld (of Santana) among others. Some of the venues these musicians have played at: Yoshi’s (SF and Oakland), Jazz at Pearl’s, Fillmore Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, SF Jazz Festival and Sonoma Jazz Festival.

The Quartet features Dan’s originals and arrangements which come from a very diverse background including influences from early/modern jazz, European classical music, Latin/African rhythms and American funk music. The group likes to take listeners on a journey that may entail openly improvised sections, meditative vamps, musical crests and eddies, suddenly changing genres and humorous harmonic surprises. Excitement, surprise, emotional depth and humor are all important aspects of the DZ Quartet.
