Details:
Pictures in the Dark is the first album of material from songwriter/guitarist/producer Will Keizer. Mixing elements of Classic Rock, 80s Alternative, modern pop, with some progressive sensibilities thrown in for good measure, the record swings between moody rockers, lovelorn ballads, and the introspection of a man in flux. Keizer here builds his house in the borderlands between art and accessibility. Sometimes he''s tempting you to sing along, other times he seems to want you to sit back and just listen.
As a writer, he moves easily between conversations about love, ponderings about life, and observations on society - sometimes in the same song. But he doesn''t always make it obvious. You always know what he''s feeling if not exactly what he''s saying, but there is a depth of meaning here if one is willing to dig a little deeper. He''s speaking to your soul rather than your head.
Pictures in the Dark is not your typical independent release, with your stripped down guitar and vocal. And it doesn''t sound like it was recorded in your buddy''s garage. There is definitely an emphasis on production values, which seems to be coming back into fashion.
It''s a little shorter than your average release, clocking in at just under 30 minutes and nine tracks, 2 of which are short instrumentals. Keizer says this is by design...
"The common industry practice is to release a CD with 12 to 15 tracks (many of which are filler) every 2 to 3 years and then milk it for as long as they can. My philosophy on releasing records is to make shorter more focused albums or "collections" of music and release them more often. For my first release, I''d tried to keep things slightly more pop but sophisticated. I''ve got compositions and pieces of music in the works that are really artsy and cool and I hope to unleash them on the world sometime in the near future. I really want to bridge the worlds of compositional music and rock & roll but not in the traditional progressive sense. Something with less organs."
