Papa Latty is one of the best known saxophonists in modern reggae jazz, a realist and a multi-instrumentalist of repute. Having been greatly influenced by the late Bob Marley and Fela, the Reggae and Afrobeat Legends respectively, he emerged with his own unique blend of afro-reggae rhythm, which is really a fusion of the pulsating afro beat and root reggae. Papa Latty performs with various instruments, but loves the jazzy creations of the saxophone.
He is a Libra, born in Nigeria on the 25th of September 1958. He spent his early life in England studying at the famous Horlborn Law Tutors and other private institutions. Without completing his LL.B, he returned to Nigeria in January 1986 and has since been studying and performing with his Jah-Love Afro-Reggae Band.
He is a final year Student of History / International Studies at the Lagos State University, Ojo. He had earlier acquired a Diploma in Law and a Certificate in Music from the University of Lagos.
Papa Latty is open to new ideas and influences and with the introduction of Afro-reggae style helped to fuse reggae into jazz with the afro touch of African percussions. For him the Saxophone serves has the lead melodic voice. His work emphasizes feelings and attitudes and serves to develop a shared philosophy of Love and Justice.
Being the leading exponent and originator of afro-reggae jazz, his jazz ensemble features some of the finest performers in the trade. His 17- piece band exhibits a cool relaxed sound that blends a high level of skill and musical training with an intimate approach to jazz improvisation.
His debut album titled ''Africa''s problem'' , exposes the ills in contemporary African society. It contain tracks like ''politics'', ''Africa''s problem'', ''Rasta Reggae'', ''Jamaica, we say hello'', ''Ghetto dub'' and ''Time for School'' which is dedicated to the Children of Africa as a tool of emancipation from poverty.
