Unkle $am (Edmonton)

If you can’t be innovative in hiphop, you won’t last. While other artists come and go on the scene, beat boxing pioneer and Ace Records recording artist Sami “Unkle $am” Elber has been keeping it real for over a decade with his own unique sound. “It started 12 years ago,” Elber explained. “I used to throw down beats for my friends and the feedback was always very positive. I started to practice all the time- waiting for the bus, taking a shower- constantly.”

Growing up in Edmonton with a love of hip-hop wasn’t without its own challenges for Elber, however. Hip-hop in Edmonton is a hard scene, there’s not as much support for emcees as there is for a rock band. I really had to keep pressure on myself to stay on my game- always lining up the next show or planning an appearance at a friend’s hall party,” Elber said.

Even within the niche of hip-hop itself in Edmonton, it was hard at first to get taken seriously by local rappers who took their image too seriously.“Beat boxing has always sat at the kid’s table in hip-hop,” Elber said. “When I first started I didn’t know of any other local beat boxers in the city. Now kids are coming up to me at parties all the time telling me they beat box too, or their friend does. I’m excited about that.”

In more recent years, beat boxing has transcended many cultural gaps to become known in the mainstream. According to Elber, when he puts on a show it’s less about competing with other performers and more about reinforcing the relationships with sound and the audience. “I want to bring more exposure to it. I love getting up on stage and celebrating beat boxing. It’s an exhibition, not a battle.” Having roots deep in a variety of music genres like reggae, soul, funk and break beats has helped Elber connect with crowds across the globe. Whether it’s a sweaty club in Thailand, Denmark or dance halls in Egypt, the rest of the globe gets the connection and gets it quickly, Elber said.

“There’s less of an obsession with the gangster image in hip hop in places like Europe and Asia,” Elber said. “The scene outside of North America is incredibly supportive of the art form. There’s an instant connection with the crowd.” While other young artists are trying desperately to get behind big names in hip hop inside the studio to help boost their image, Elber has been working the front lines, putting himself in front of legendary performers like Method Man, Redman, Pete Rock , CL Smooth and Hell Razah on stage and in front of fans. “I prefer that feel-good vibe you can bring to a live show. I like to take my sound and reach deep into your chest and shake it up so you walk around at the club for the rest of the night is like you’ve got a fever,” Elber said. “Other emcees have to bring all this equipment just to bring their sound to the show. I say give me a microphone and I can do a show right now- I am my sound.”

Shamik (Vancouver)

Shamik hears music in his head, and uses beatboxing to bring it to life. He covers a wide a variety of genres in his captivating live show of vocal percussion. Since 2001, he has been on a mission to spread the artform of beatboxing everywhere he can. Shamik has performed across North America, India, Czech Republic, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia.

He began singing at the age of 4 with his older brother, Vivek Shraya (Kuskus Records), and always had a knack for making sounds. This transformed into his ability to mimic voices and music. Shamik''s taste in music was all over the map as he listened to rhythms and melodies to learn. When he reached high school he learned of an artform called beatboxing. Over the next few years, he began studying the work of other beatboxers including The Fatboys, Biz Markie, Doug E. Fresh and Rahzel. In 2001, Shamik met fellow beatboxer Sami Elber aka Unkle $am (Ace Records). They shared ideas, and with Elber''s help, Shamik slowly learned the basics of beatboxing. He isolated sounds like the kick, snare, and bassline to slowly build his skills. After performing together at shows, parties, fundraisers, and on street corners, Shamik began to get noticed in his hometown of Edmonton.

In 2005, Shamik was invited by Degree (Subterranean Sound) to open for the 3 time World DMC champion DJ Craze (Cartel Records) of Miami. This show was a pinnacle in his career as his live show was witnessed by music promoters from Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. They realized that booking Shamik to open for headliners would bring the crowd to the dance floor. He continued his growth by beatboxing all over Western Canada. In 2006, Shamik opened for his hero and the world''s #1 beatboxer, Killa Kela. This impacted Shamik a great deal and inspired him to believe that the possibilities are endless. Beatboxing is often associated with hip hop music, so Shamik decided to perform at every kind of show no matter what genre. This helped him cover more ground as he performed at several festivals including: Rothbury Festival (Michigan), Colours of Ostrava Festival (Czech Republic), Vancouver Island Music Festival (BC), Shambhala Music Festival (BC), Sunburn Festival (India), Indian Electronica Festival (New York), Strawberry Moon Festival (Ontario), Edmonton Fringe Festival (Alberta), Harrison Hot Springs Festival of the Arts (BC), Komasket Festival (BC), North Country Fair (Alberta), Sasquatch Gathering (Alberta), Astral Harvest (Alberta), Yirr- Ma Festival (Quebec), and Motion Notion (Alberta).

Shamik''s goal has always been to make believers out of doubters. Since 2005, he organized 4 straight successful summer festival tours and and 2 headlining tours in Asia. 2008 marked the busiest year in Shamik''s career, as he performed in 8 countries, at 10 outdoor summer festivals, 11 Canadian dates with Method Man & Redman, and 14 North American dates with Bassnectar. The most important aspect about beatboxing is that Shamik is having fun while doing it. He hopes to continue to travel with his music, record on his and other artists'' projects, and share it throughout his journey.
