The liner notes really do paint the picture needed to understand the music, and this recording - the third by the Jack Brass Band...

"New Orleans Music is a gift, a blessing, a treasure. The brassy notes and syncopated rhythms passed down from generation to generation.

New Orleans Music is taught, literally, on the streets. Younger musicians march shoulder-to-shoulder with older musicians who once stood in those same shoes, parading side-by-side with their musical mentors. It’s the way we’ve all learned this incredible Musical Tradition for decades…centuries. From father to son, Uncle to nephew, teacher to student.

Music is our way of life. One need only spend a short period of time in New Orleans to realize we openly embrace tradition. Whether it is the food we eat or the music we play. We know what we like and we like what we know. It comes naturally to us because we are music.

There is a responsibility that comes with knowledge and study. As I sit and listen to the Jack Brass Band, I am comforted knowing that our traditions in New Orleans are important to others. Important enough to study the masters of New Orleans Music from Jelly Roll Morton to the Rebirth Brass Band. Important enough to spend hours practicing and honoring the masters whose shoes we now fill. And what an honorable job the Jack Brass Band does. Not only do they emulate their teachers with exacting precision, they also leave their own distinctive imprint on a musical style that is now theirs.

You need not be from New Orleans to embrace our musical traditions. I am comforted knowing a new generation of musicians are touched by our musical heritage. Touched enough to commit themselves to traditions that are now theirs. Theirs to share with others and to teach to another generation."
Ben Jaffe, Preservation Hall Jazz Band Director
