BRIEF
Portland, Oregon-based Paula Sinclair’s latest CD – STEADYGIRL – is her strongest album to date, raw emotion spilling from each of the 11 tracks with muscular power and tender grace, supported by the instrumental backing of Tony Furtado and Tim Ellis, among others.

Paula rivets audiences with confident, fluid guitar-playing and vocals as brassy, sweet, and earthy as the soil on the Lexington, Kentucky farm where she grew up. Compared to Chrissie Hynde, Lucinda Williams, Roseanne Cash, and Mary-Chapin Carpenter, she is a sultry crooner with a country soul and a rock-and-roll heart.

In his review of her album AVALANCHE (2006) in The Oregonian, critic Don Campbell wrote, “It''s like flipping to the cool side of the pillow on a sweltering summer night to hear an artist such as Paula Sinclair." STEADYGIRL takes that pillow to another level!

THE MAKING OF STEADYGIRL
In July and August of 2008, Paula recorded her latest album of original songs, in collaboration with songwriter Rob Barteletti and under the direction of producer Rob Stroup. The new CD, STEADYGIRL, will be released to retail stores on March 17, 2009. Paula recorded two previous CDs with Stroup at 8-Ball, Avalanche (2006) and The Good Horse (2007),

Of STEADYGIRL, Paula says, “This is the album I’ve been waiting so long to create. It has my best songs combined with Rob’s (Barteletti) best songs – and a great Steve Earle cover, to boot!”

With Tony Furtado (slide guitar, dojo, and banjo), Tim Ellis (guitar and mandolin), Jean-Pierre Garau (B3 and piano), Paul Brainard (pedal steel), Arthur Parker (bass), and Drew Shoals (drums) supporting Paula’s soaring, rich vocals, this project has the makings of an alt country hit destined to launch Paula to broad popularity in radio markets regionally and across the country.

CD RELEASE SHOW
Paula will join forces with fellow 8-Ball Studio recording artist Halélupé, who is also releasing Stroup-produced CD, THE HEART OF THINGS, backed by the same team of musicians. Paula and Lupé decided to share the celebration by putting on a dual show on Saturday, March 28, at Lola’s Room, 1332 W Burnside, Portland, OR 97209.

The show begins at 8 p.m. Young prodigy Sara Hensel will open the show, followed by Lupé and Paula each alternately performing two sets, supported by Ellis, Garau, Parker, Stroup (on drums), and some special guests.

Tickets are available from the artists through February 28 for $10 and no service fee. From March 1 through March 27, tickets will be available through the Crystal Ballroom box office or through Ticketmaster for $12, plus service charges. Tickets will also be available on the day of the show and at the door for $15.

PAULA’S NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: 2008
• Opened for national folk stars and Signature Sounds recording artists Tracy Grammer and Jim Henry at The Bite of Oregon in Portland.

• Performed two of her Stafford song/poems, scored by Allan Halbert and accompanied by the 56-piece Starlight Symphony under Halbert’s direction in Tigard, Oregon.

• A popular performer on the McMenamins’ Oregon circuit: Edgefield (Troutdale), Boone’s Treasury (Salem), The Sand Trap (Gearhart), The Grand Lodge (Forest Grove), Cornelius Pass Roadhouse (Hillsboro), The Hotel Oregon (McMinnville), and a regular monthly show at The White Eagle (Portland).

MORE PLANS
Paula has recently completed another project at 8 Ball, again working with Stroup, this time on an album of songs using the poetry of the late, great former U.S. Library of Congress Poet Laureate William Stafford.

“William Stafford’s poems are not only beautiful,” Paula explains, “but they also have the kind of rhythm that appeals to me as a songwriter. I read them and music just comes through me. On another level, I feel a personal connection to his work. There is no pretense in his poetry – he observes and then writes from his heart with an elegant simplicity, with great compassion, and without wasting a single word.”

This project will be released as a CD sometime in January 2010 as part of a celebration honoring Stafford’s birthday and memory.

“HERSTORY”
Paula’s music career began at age 14, playing around the Lexington, Kentucky, area in a country duo back when there were no TV sets in bars and people came to hear live music to accompany their conversations. One of fourteen siblings rich in creative talents, it’s no wonder Paula is a multi-faceted musical artist.

Today, Paula is adept as a solo performer and a powerhouse in a band, often joined by drummer/vocalist Kenny Sawyer.
