WRITING THE ALBUM

If you were to ask Coltron James to describe the experience of writing his debut album, Tell Me Sincerely…, one word would come to his mind: “Cathartic!”

Coltron began writing for Tell Me Sincerely… in August 2006. “This musical compilation is a product of emotional and spiritual unrest,” he says. “I just had a lot of questions about life, love and a lot of restlessness about the future. Taking the time to sit down and write all of my feelings has been such an emotional release for me.”

“The technicalities of producing and recording Tell Me Sincerely…,” Coltron recalls, “were a creatively challenging, but rewarding, process.” He reflects, “Production can sometimes be an all-consuming thing, taking over a lot of your time and resources. But with all of these inherent stresses, I still wouldn’t trade the experience [of writing and singing] for anything.”

He eulogizes his production team: “It’s all in the talent you work with,” he says. “The professionals I collaborate with have a really good ear and an innate ability to hear my ideas—as I’m able to sing and communicate them—and bring them to musical life without hurting the original integrity of the idea.”

When asked how he feels about his performances, Coltron laughingly grimaces, “As many of my friends know, I’m somewhat of a perfectionist—which, if you can imagine, is good at times and bad at others. Like for example, sometimes I’ll hear one of my records one day and think my vocal mix sounds good, and then the next day hear the same mix and think, ‘Wow…this is rancid. We have to re-mix all of this’. I’m super critical of my work…often times putting up a mic in the middle of mixing session because I wasn’t happy with one of my vocal takes,” he concedes.

“But despite my scrupulous self-criticism,” he grins, “I’m overall proud of my first [album] effort, and am now just looking forward to completing the writing and production of my second album.”

ORIGINS

Coltron describes his passion for music: “I’ve been involved in the performing arts since around the age of 10, and for some reason musical expression has always been the form of art that has, for lack of a better definition, spiritually moved me.” He adds, “For me, within music there is such an strong exchange of feeling and emotion that’s irreproducible any other way.”

Coltron James was born in the sunny state of Arizona. At an early age, Coltron discovered his love for performing arts while doing independent and industry film work, making PSA’s for radio, and performing in numerous plays. As a young man, Coltron’s appreciation for music was evident. By the age of 14 he wrote his first song titled, “Forever Again.” (This song can be found on his debut album Tell Me Sincerely…).

“‘Forever Again’ was a milestone for me because it was the first time I believed in my ability to write for myself…I mean, I had something to say—about life, love, everything—and being able to write about these things was purely emotional.”

“There’s also a story surrounding ‘Forever Again’”, Coltron reminisces. “That song was written about a girl; someone I really cared about but I don’t think even acknowledged my existence. The song is written from the perspective of visualizing our ‘could have been’ relationship.”

EXPECTATIONS

When Coltron was asked about his expectations for the release of Tell Me Sincerely…, he chuckles, “The only expectation that I have is to be able to put my feelings out there, musically, and to hope that others—even one person—can relate at some level. For me, the greatest success I could ask for is about making a connection with others. That’s the most important thing.”

“I’m not pretentious or arrogant; I don’t expect everyone to like my music, and it’s not like I think I have a spectacular voice. The truth is that I have something to say about life, and I feel that music helps me to express that side of my otherwise ‘silent self’.”

Warmly smiling, Coltron ends with, “At the end of the day all I can do is make music that I’m proud of and that I’d want to listen to. I hope others will want to listen, too!”

Coltron is currently writing and producing his second album (due to be released sometime in Winter 2009).
