Peter Lai – One of the few Hong Kong born composers who releases instrumental solo albums as prime profession since 1995. His success did not come in a day or two, in fact, instrumental has never been a focused market in where he was born.
After 5 years of education in a small town Oswestry, U.K., Peter returned to Hong Kong and took up a job as assistant sound engineer (also known as ‘tape-boy’). With his classical piano skill and desire of becoming a composer, he started to learn as much as he could during the time of his recording studio occupation. Those days lasted until the manager of Warner Music Ltd. discovered his talent and offered him a job as record producer. Since then, he had composed over 20 pop songs (and of course, including some award winning and all time favorites) for local major labels including Warner Music, EMI and BMG, etc. One day, he realized that Hong Kong’s pop music could be a global phenomenon but however, the language (or lyric) barrier would still limit his compositions. He started to compose instrumental music and eventually stopped producing pop music altogether. “Devoting or Not Doing” is a Peter Lai rule. But even with series of contributions in the pop music industry and public recognitions, major records companies were not ready to focus on Hong Kong’s instrumental market at that time. Peter was not able to succeed in Hong Kong but instead, a Japanese company – Planet Inc. had discovered his talent and made him the first (until now) and the only Hong Kong instrumental artist with a Japanese working visa. Until 2008, a total of 8 albums have been released since the contract. Besides music albums, Peter has been creating music for visual projects produced by media such as NHK and other TV stations programs throughout Asia. Until recent years, he has started to co-produce cultural visual projects in Mainland China, thus, helped widen his perceptions of every ‘little’ thing on this planet.
The main concept of Peter Lai’s music is to break free any barriers that could prevent audience from reaching.
