David Jorgensen aka Divine Wind & company has lived in the southwest for 12 years. In this time, he has made relationships and connections with Native American people of various tribes, most notably, the Navajo or Dine’ as the people are known. He has traveled widely and enjoyed many experiences on tribal lands throughout Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico.
David started playing saxophone more than 30 years ago. He acquired his first Native American flute at the Taos Pueblo while trading there in 1996. An instant love for the sound of this instrument led to a collection that is growing to this day and is composed of flutes from many tribes throughout the United States. David enjoys the friendship of people from many tribes as well as a local Dine’ flute maker.
David plays at Native American gatherings, Pow-Wows on invitation, and at several locations in the Phoenix metro area.
Eagle Spirit was created during a 3 year period that David spent working with the Salt River Pima or Akimel Au Authum as they are called in their own language. During this time, David worked as a music teacher with one driving focus. It was to give the traditional music back to this tribe which faces a great deal of stress from the urban environment that encroaches on all sides. A major part of this music class was to actually craft traditional instruments with the students – drums, rattles, flutes, rasps – many of the instruments used on this CD are quite similar to the ones made in that music class.
Many of the songs on the CD Eagle Spirit are based on Pima legends, others on historical accounts of life before the reservation. Some are based on trips to the Dine’ Nation, the moods and impressions of that place.
This CD is very peaceful to listen to, with a very relaxing effect – a perfect tonic for modern society and the issues that people are facing worldwide.
