Neal Christopherson learned to play the guitar in his late teens, and from the start found it easier to play songs he made up rather than learn those written by others. He formed Orange Fight in 2008 to elevate his music from simple acoustic-guitar-and-voice songs to full-blooded rock ‘n roll.
Combining influences including Wilco, Pink Floyd, the Velvet Underground, and Bob Dylan, the songs on Orange Fight’s debut range from quiet folky affairs (“Sunset Steeple Road,” “Love Won’t Leave”) to faster uptempo songs (“Big Machine,” “This Chaotic Divide,” “Water”). Songs are grounded in simple chords strummed on an acoustic guitar, then covered with drums, bass, piano, and multiple electric guitar tracks. This wall of sound creates the perfect backdrop for Christopherson’s quiet baritone as he sings about a wide range of topics, including love, loss, social change, spiritual redemption, and long-distance running.
