The Muttering Guppies
An element of mystery shrouds the formation, or should I say, DISCOVERY, of The Muttering Guppies. The four life forms that constitute what we in our world call a “band” or “group” were discovered accidentally by a lab technician studying pond scum taken from the edge of a toxic waste site in industrial Seattle, Washington. Analyzing the sample under a microscope, the technician began hearing barely audible sounds emanating from the Petri dish. Further analysis using highly sensitive microphones and sophisticated interpretive software yielded astonishing sonic patterns, which, through further computer imaging processing turned up the patterns that we identify as “songs”, and that are provided here for the adventurous and receptive listener. The life forms responsible for this output have been given faces and names to make it easier to identify with them and the “music” they create, apparently as a life preserving function against the toxic environment in which they live. Try these songs as medicine for your soul, a drink of pure water while crossing the empty desert of our culture. There are even a few that are blissfully insipid toe tappers. There’s exuberance for life here, honesty, and an intellect behind the lyrics that belongs to a humble lad who has travelled through life and gained some scars and depth but has not lost joy. Or you could tune in to another punk whining, “Tell me who I am; I’m so confused. Love me Be me ME ME ME ME” and other narcissistic murmurings. Not that there’s anything wrong with a musical culture that asks those of the most experience to go to the back of the bus while pre-pubescent children drive us off a cliff. (Yes, to be read with irony). Ok, I’ll add more to this if you, my dear reader, emails me and asks pointed questions.
