About this CD...from Harriet Schock

It thrills me to bring new listeners to 19 wonderful artists who are current songwriting students of mine.

I started teaching songwriting in 1986. USC had asked me to teach songwriting the year before and I said it couldn''t be taught. A year later, I gave in. I didn''t know it was to be one of the best decisions of my life and career as a songwriter. Not only did it expand my love for songwriting, it enriched my life with creative people who became my friends.

Each year, in my classes for the Songwriters Guild in L.A., in private consultation and in my correspondence courses around the world, I would hear songs written according to my confidential "steps." The writing that went on during these steps would often tear my heart out. I''m sure my students would add, at this point, that the steps often tore their hair out as well. But the final product was always something meaningful to the writer, to his or her audience, to the person the communication was directed to...in every case, someone was moved.

If you''ve read my book, Becoming Remarkable, For Songwriters and Those Who Love Songs, you know I''m not about helping people write the next "hit" that sounds like the last "hit." My teaching concerns itself with communication through the art form of songwriting, to create emotional impact through craft and truth. If you can hold a mirror up to your nose and fog still forms, you will feel something when you listen to these songs.

Currently I have a lot of students whose songs I want others to hear. Many of these writers have been studying with me for years. Some have recorded entire CDs containing songs written with "the steps."
You will find website or contact information under each lyric. Please let the writer know if you enjoy his or her work.

REVIEW

Harriet Schock/Schock Futures
Review by Jimi Yamagishi
Director, SongNet

Harriet Schock is a multiplatinum songwriter whose songwriting classes are much more than just about the song. Harriet calls it "Becoming Remarkable".

This is a collection of work from some of her students, in a wide variety of genres, from hard rockin'' blues to simple folk, jazz to rap. It''s all about the song, & a great song works across all genres. The proof is here, on this CD. There are many levels of production on this disc, some sounding like a high-dollar major label hit, & a couple that almost sound like they were recorded on a boombox in a bathroom, but the heart & soul of each songwriter shines through on every cut. Kudos to Randall Michael Tobin for making them all sound relatively consistent, given the diverse quality of the recordings he had to work with!

Starting off with Nita Whitaker singing "I''m not Britney & I''m Not Whitney..." you know right away where you''re headed. This, like the other songs on this disc, are from a deeper place in the heart & soul of each writer. Nita may not be Britney or Whitney, but she sure could take on Alicia Keys easily with this well produced track. The next cut, "Sweet Eleven" by SongNet founder Linda Geleris, captures a powerful moment in time as a parent realizes their child is growing up. Even more powerful than the hit "Butterfly Kisses" from a few years back, you begin to realize sometimes the best songs are often not heard because of the way the powers-that-be are all about marketing & not great music. The clean solo instrument & vocal recordings of Marcos Lopez-Iglesias'' "Uncomplicated Cat" & Sally Zito''s "Greenline" is a good reminder that there are many excellent live singer-songwriter venues around town where you can experience amazing songs in an intimate environment. Rick Hopper''s "Fly with Me" swings hard, with Cathy Segal-Garcia''s vocals echoing some of the finest voices in jazz, with the hot trio arrangement movin'' things forward.

There are 19 songs in this collection, each one a carefully woven tapestry from the essence of each songwriter, a personal statement, & a gift to anyone who listens.
