Details:
Siddhartha was formed in 2003 when Thomas Galasso teamed college friend Marlon Hauser with guitarists Ayinde Zuri and Justin Walker. They began writing songs and playing shows in Detroit, with Walker playing Keith Richards to Hauser’s Jagger. They very quickly garnered national attention, and over the course of two years, played continually larger venues, drawing large crowds and comparisons to The Stooges and MC5. Opening for such acts as Detroit Cobras, Dirty Americans, and The Go, Siddhartha caught the attention of Jim Diamond of White Stripes and Dirtbombs fame. He produced Siddhartha’s first EP, War is Tragic, as well as their first eponymous full-length album. These works solidified the band as heroes of the Detroit underground rock scene.

Since 2007, the band has made appearances across the nation, playing various large and small venues including Cat Club and Spaceland in Los Angeles, and Grant and Green and Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. The same year, Manimal Vinyl released Through the Wildnerness, a tribute to Madonna and fundraising vehicle for children with AIDS in Malawi. Hauser contributed a cover version of “Holiday”, receiving high praise from Madonna and music critics alike.

At the end of 2007, Hauser relocated to San Francisco, effectively marking the end of Siddhartha as everyone knew it. Hauser refocused his sights on following in the footsteps of such West Coast greats as Arthur Lee and Love, The Doors, and Brian Jonestown Massacre, dedicating himself to creating new music influenced by the multi-layered audio techniques of The Zombies and The Pretty Things, to the ethereal vocals and riffs of Otis Redding and Velvet Underground.

Hauser began 2008 with a renewed sense of orchestrating and recording new songs. Steering away from the previous Detroit garage sound and coming more into his own sound devoid of influences, Hauser is now experimenting with a wide range of sounds and found objects, incorporating Playskool toys, trash cans, bathroom sinks, and finding new ways of mixing more traditional instrumentation. His first solo EP, Where the Wild Things Grow, was recorded by Hauser over the course of 4 months in a bathroom and makes use of all of these various audio devices. Continuing to redefine his musical boundaries, he’s currently working with playwright and filmmaker Maria Breaux to create an original musical score for The Mark Ten’s Fantastic Parade, a recent recipient of a Theatre Bay Area New Works Grant. This is an exciting time for Siddhartha, and what lies ahead is certain to push the limits of Hauser’s artistry even further.

Where the Wild Things Grow EP: All words and music written, recorded, and produced by Marlon Hauser, except for Holiday, recorded by Gideon Zaretsky, written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens, and performed by Madonna, and The Birth Book, recorded by Gideon Zaretsky.

Created over 4 months in a San Francisco bathroom.
