One thing Danielle Kurant never expected to do was write music. She began classical training in piano at the age of 5, performing frequently. Quickly mastering Mozart and Beethoven, she proceeded to tackle the works of Liszt and Gershwin. Performing the works of others came easily – almost intuitively, but it would be fifteen years before she began writing music of her own.
It was 2AM one eventful night and Danielle Kurant found herself unable to sleep – 2AM and a melody was inexplicably present in her thoughts. Try as she might, she could not bring herself to sleep due to the constant repetition of the words through her head: “I’m headed to London; there’s nothing for me here.” Suddenly she had an idea. Grabbing a pen and notebook, Danielle hurriedly scribbled down the lyrics. Once “London” was immortalized, she instantly and peacefully drifted into slumber.
Every night after this was the same. Danielle would be unable to sleep due to music and lyrics running through her mind. Relief and rest would only come when she wrote down the songs. Nearly two years and over forty songs later, Beginnings was brought into existence.
Drawing from various sources of inspiration, Beginnings provides a refreshing perspective on life and love. “London” and “Start Over” cry out for liberation from a stagnant and stressful life. “Spare Room” addresses the universal quest for purpose in life. “Revolution” challenges the listener to take action in the world, while “Green Kitchen” chronicles the lament of lost love with the ever-present hope of the future. Danielle Kurant’s topics are as varied as her musical styles, yet manage to synergize into a coherent whole with her debut album.
