Details:
Imagine you’ve been stuck inside watching the pouring rain for days upon days and all of a sudden there’s a break in the weather and the sun bursts through the clouds and welcomes you outside. Dune Tran’s sound is that first step through the front door where you smell the dewy grass, feel the warm sun on your face, hear the crunch of leaves under your feet, breathe in the crisp air. It’s the beginning of something great, something full of excitement and love, a journey, a promise you’re keeping. And at the same time it’s an exhale from something accomplished, a thankfulness, a pensive moment. Some of her influences are Tori Amos, Aimee Mann, Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie, although her sound is not a replica of any of these greats as she’s managed to create a unique sound of her own. Her voice is creamy, floating and spirited, backed by smooth and easy melodies on the piano and guitar. In sum, Dune makes you feel connected, which is her ultimate goal. “Music is a huge deal to me. To put some heart into it and to be able to reach someone and connect on a musical level is indescribable.”

The Vietnamese singer songwriter, from Edmonton, Alberta Canada moved to San Francisco 7 years ago to embark on a musical journey. Even though she had no access to lessons growing up, it didn’t stop her love of music nor her desire to play. “I fell in love with the sound of a piano at an early age and knew that one day I''d be good friends with her.” Good friends indeed. Upon relocating to the Bay Area, she bought a digital piano, a book of Tori Amos sheet music and found teacher Elya Finn to teach her the basics. After two years of method books and classical music training, she continued her education by taking music theory, improvisation, accompaniment, voice lessons, music software, composing and songwriting. And the best part is that she did it for herself, for the love of music. She spent a year and a half playing keys and singing backup with SF indie band, Leilujh, before embarking on her solo project. In sum, Dune Tran is making beautiful, inspiring music and her story is encouraging others to go after their dreams, no matter how far off they seem.

Joshua Rumer, her producer and CEO of Invengo Records, helped her dial her delicious sound and the end result after a year of hard work is her debut album “Heart Anchors” which will launch Spring 2009. Using organic sounds such as piano, guitar, violin and cello, highlighted with hints of electronic synths and drum beats, Dune tantalizes the modern indie pop palate. Each song is distinct and unique from each of the others on the album, providing listeners with a refreshing and captivating experience. As she says, “I love how music can move me emotionally, energize me, comfort me or inspire me,” and this album does just that. A feast for the senses, “Heart Anchors” will set you adrift on a spiritual, emotional, reflective journey.
