The first thing you’ll notice about Escape Key on their debut EP, None of Them Are You, is how much of a storm three otherwise easy-going people can kick up in three minute bursts. Hooks reminiscent of the Replacements erupt one after another with Steve Albini-like bombast--the bass lines drive, the drums crash with abandon. The disc feels live.
“We recorded in an old civil war era munitions factory,” says singer and guitarist Matt Hannah, “and we didn’t need any reverb, the room just exploded the minute Bryan hit the drums; we just tried to catch it all on tape.”
None of Them Are You is about longing for the genuine article, in love, friendship, and in song. Each track bristles with unrestrained frustration, anxiety, and ultimately exuberance. “Vanish In the Air” is a three minute hookfest with boy-girl harmonies in which the singer longs to literally disappear with another--exactly how is never explained. “No Light” is celebratory, driving rock, but “feeling all right” is only achieved when “driving and there’s no light to see.”
The band loves to keep things simple, loud, and honest. In a time when too many bands hide behind gimmicks, irony, and dense instrumentation, Escape Key is looking for what’s real and essential. This EP is their first drumstick-breaking, amps on ten, four to the floor attempt to get there.
