Biographical
Richie''s grandfather played piano for silent movies, and his mother was a school music teacher. Richie was lucky enough to inherit some of these music genes and has strummed guitar since his youth. In the 70''s he blew a large bore trumpet for a brass section in a cover rock band. Later he emerged from his on-the-beach hippy lifestyle phase and mixed sound professionally in and near Vancouver Island - his birthplace. Richie has rafted through Fraser River''s Hell''s Gate Canyon, fished in Pacific Ocean gales - and lived to tell the tale. He now enjoys more relaxed island living.

''I enjoy almost all music genres and particularly like jazz and blues. My current favorite song is ''Make it Smooth'' which I wrote for guitar, saxophones and vocals on the Zoom Zoom CD.'' - RICHIErichieRichie

Sounds like ''Jazz Alternative!
Easy listening smooth acoustic jazz alternative. Feels like Jazz with a sprinkling of Pop and a dash of Swing. Lots of smooth, smooth acoustic guitar with plenty of awesome saxophone and just the right amount of percussion.

Album Concept
The idea was to produce an easy listening CD you could start at track #1 and let it play right through to the end. Where you can listen to and enjoy every track every time. A handful of artists have done this: Dire Straits, Bruce Hornsby, Sade and a few others. These artists all have an album where every track fits and the entire album runs smoothly from beginning to end. Thats what I was going for, and you can judge for yourself whether I achieved this design objective. Let me know what you think?

Track Story
track #1: for the moment
I wrote this tune as the first song for a show. I needed something that reflected my style, gently eased into the groove, was fun to play, kicked everything off and shared some of my West Coast roots. Beginning the tune with a rain shower was natural because I live in a temperate rain forest climate. Often that is how the day or night does start - with a rain shower - the same showers that bring the salmon up the streams, the eagles and bears that feed on the fish, and grow the vast forests of fir trees that shelter the wildlife.

track #2: thought it was over
Well I never really thought for a moment that this particular fling would evolve into a long term relationship. But it did - and this song tells you how.

track #3: 3 in flight
I had a vivid dream. I woke up recalling a lot of detail. I scribbled down on paper a description of what happened in the dream. I added music. The characters and situation in the dream gave rise to certain feelings, and so the chorus was established. I don''t always get dreams about the music I write, but in this tune I was totally there.

track #4: she got blonde
Romantic highlights with swing.

track #5: zoom zoom
I wrote this as my nightclub or lounge song. Its mellow but it has a nice swing to it. Some of the chords and progressions are very jazzy. The song is about meeting a new friend in a crowded place and instantly feeling that special charm or magnetic attraction that you sometimes get. Like when you meet for the first time but it seems like you''re in tune or connected with the person on an intense level - even though you don''t know them yet. I particularly like the last chord of the song.

track #6: going to hawaii
My friend Mike flew to Hawaii and all I got was memories of being there in earlier years. A somewhat nostalgic memory and feelings poured into this song. Includes slide guitar riffs throughout the song which gives it a Hawaiian sound. The simpler I made the slide the better it sounded.

track #7: hopelessly
I really liked Willie Nelson''s ''Crazy'' - with Willie Nelson, Diana Krall and Elvis Costello - its a great tune. Anyway, I wanted to have a good ballad too, so I wrote ''Hopelessly''. Hopelessly is all about the feelings you have when you''re in love. I left all of the verses in, even though the song length runs to over 7 minutes. I added a pan flute solo, it leaves a haunting, almost spacey impression that may just separate the physical from the emotional. I helped separate the voice from the guitar by adding a flange effect to the guitar. The subtle percussion sounds best with headphones. The high hat has variable speed - its not all on the same beat - and this increases the tension in the song.

track #8: make it smooth
Here I tried to make a smooth flowing sound but still have time and dynamic changes. The song is about a fan wanting to hear a favorite song again. Its the only track with soprano saxophone, and the soprano sax sounds so rich I could easily have added it to other tracks too. If somebody asked me to play the smoothest jazz song I knew of, this song would be a top contender.

track #9: i could carry you
I''ve had this song in me for decades. The music was originally composed on a 12 string many years ago and I carried the music around with me in my head. The recording here uses a 6 string which results in a less pronounced swing, but with a cleaner sound. For the solo I considered using a wide variety of instruments, including saxophones, but the pure bright sound of a flute offered the best result against the swing guitar licks in this song. Its a really laid back swing but its there if you listen closely to the guitar. This song tells you what I want to be reborn as in my next life. I feel really good about releasing this song, its a nice piece and it feels so comfortable. The musicbox ending is one of my favorite endings.

track #10: instrumental #1
I turned on the recording equipment, cranked up the delay, lit the incense, fired up myself and recorded this song in one take.

track #11: the childrens'' hour
This is a childrens lullaby I''ve played for many years. I liked the way The Beatles ended Abbey Road, this is a similar style ending. I also think its a reflection of where we''ve been, where we''re going and what really matters. The glass bell percussion has such a bright crystal-like resonance. Having such a pure sound was a good way to end an easy listening album.

Instrumentation
I have a little trepidation about using electronic synthesizers for some instrumentation, rather than a live instrument. I really do like the acoustic sound even though I can and do go totally electronic in other CD''s to be released. The big plus to using synthesized instrumentation was that I was able to accompany my own music - playing a lot of the music I heard in my head as solos. It would have taken months, if not years, to score that music and then to arrange recording sessions and musicians and mixes and so on... So the end result of using the instrumentation I have on the zoom zoom CD is a tighter fit between instruments and music closer to the overall sound I was going for.

Headphones
This CD is mixed down to achieve the full benefit of stereo imaging. Some of the subtle nuances of the stereo imaging sound really good when you put your headphones on.
