"MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS" JADCD 1097

Works by: Eric Gross, Ann Carr-Boyd, Robert Allworth. Duration: 50''23"

Featured players in this engaging CD are Michael Hooper, mandolin; Esther Cheng, violin; Michael Tabrett, viola & Catherine Tabrett, ''cello. This group premieres new works by Gross & Allworth. Adding to Gross'' already substantial contribution to mandolin repertoire is CONCERTO DA CAMERA (1997) in 4 movements. Reflecting, in its structure, the musical traditions of Vienna and, in particular, the work of 18th century Czech composer Dusek. Gross achieves a pleasing fusion of past and present. A work of distinctive modernity.

Also pleasing, and written for the same ensemble, are 3 new works by Allworth: MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS is autumnal in character, giving clear themes in 12-note formations and sequential forms. In MEDITATIONS prominence is given to the mandolin, while in FOREVER SUNSET, inspired by Tennyson''s poem "The Lotus Eaters", the ensemble creates colouristic effects.

Carr-Boyd''s SUITE VERONIQUE for solo harpsichord (1982) places modern dance and folk rhythms in the structure of a baroque suite. The CD closes with a historic recording by the Choir of Christ Church St. Lawrence in Sydney, 1979,
of NUNC DIMITTIS, conducted by Colin Sapsford.
