At first it was John Prine songs and Drive-By Truckers songs. City of New Orleans and stumbling through Louden Wainwright''s One Man Guy or all eight minutes plus of Nick Cave''s Curse of Millhaven. Long days of cover song after cover song for the sheer joy of making music in a garage.
It was Dave, Jason and Jack to begin with. Dave was learning guitar. His roommate, Jack, already played a little. Turned out Jason could sing. Who knew? Bob Dylan songs and Ben Folds songs and The Band and even Alice Cooper, with an open jam session attitude that brought in unlikely friends, some of whom stayed on.
Ryan joined on bass. Then Mark on guitar and Eric on drums. A second Dave (lets call him Dave M.) joined in on keys. There came a point when they could no longer deny the fact that they were officially a band.
They called themselves, Rubella Graves.
Things settled in. They began to get tight, and somewhere in there Dave (the first Dave; we''ll call him Dave R.) and Jack started writing songs.
Songs about love. Songs about drugs. Songs about girls. Songs about pasta. Songs about dresses. Songs about Uncles and dreams and attention spans and Vancouver, WA. and other points of interest in the great Northwest. Songs about dogs. Songs about cats. Songs about choices and skateboards and road trips and whiskey and yes, more songs about girls.
In 2009 thirteen of those songs ended up on this CD, “The World Will End In The Key Of G” This was accomplished through sheer determination, blind luck, and the support of many, many people outside the band who believed in the project enough to lend their help.
