Brad Downs, a Mississippi Delta native, is a singer/songwriter who now calls Athens home. He recently finished recording Winter Breathing, his debut album that features a solid core of well-known Athens musicians and some special guests from Athens and beyond. Winter Breathing was recorded by Drew Vandenberg at Chase Park Transduction on scattered days during July and August, 2008. It is now available to the world in jewel cases with fancy shrink-wrapping.
Brad Downs & the Poor Bastard Souls is essentially a project born out of the musical friendship between Brad and Paul “Crumpy” Edwards (White Buffalo, Barbara Cue). Crumpy, in addition to holding down bass duties, is the primary producer of the record. Drum and percussion responsibilities fall primarily upon Randy Durham, a rock-solid drummer and also a former member of White Buffalo. William Tonks (Barbara Cue, Bloodkin), highly sought after Athens guitar hero and dobro champion, adds the strawberry pie and whipped cream with his superior electric guitars and dobro. William is all over this record. He really makes it sparkle.
Along with this central crew of able musicians, Winter Breathing presents a phenomenal cast of guest players and singers who dropped by Chase Park on random days to contribute some of their various talents…

"I was first introduced to Brad and his music by Crump last summer. Brad had decided to play out and share his songs with the public and needed a drummer to help out with the project. I met Brad and listened to his songs and was impressed with him and with what I heard. I was impressed also with Brad''s passion for his music and his commitment to his work. After helping him share his songs at the Nowhere Bar, I was pleased to help develop some more tunes and honored to be called in to help record this project when Brad decided it was time to hit the studio. There are a couple of pieces here I really do like, but I''m sure everyone will have their own favorites as this has turned out very well, and I think everyone involved in it is pleased with the outcome and proud of the results. I think Brad is an excellent songwriter, and I''m looking forward to having the opportunity to again share his work with folks live and to assist in any further recording ventures.
