“…This Island Earth has already proven to be a refreshing link to a musical quality long overdue.” – NACA Programming (Mar. 1997)

With a penchant for writing catchy, clever melodies and a determination to explore uncharted territory, This Island Earth plays infectious “Pop-N-Roll” with a seasoned blend of traditional pop sensibility and invention.

“I don’t think we’re worried about musical trends,” says Dean Pascarella. “Good songs transcend musical trends. We just want to write the best songs we can.” Pascarella (lead guitarist/bassist/backing vocalist) voices the sentiments of his fellow band-mates, who first assembled in 1993 as a somewhat “caustic” reaction to the distorted walls of sound dominating Alternative music at the time. Joining him are Peter McCulloch (lead vocalist/bassist/rhythm guitarist), Wayne Goehring (drummer), Patrick Sciacca (guitarist/bassist), and Chip Sciacca (keyboardist/backing vocalist). “Popular music’s in a state of somnambulism” says McCulloch. “We’re hoping to lead a resurgence of smart, melodic pop back to the forefront while redefining it in the process.”

Easier said than done for most bands, but This Island Earth has already proven to be a refreshing link to a musical quality long overdue. The group quickly became a staple of many local college radio stations with the homespun cassette demo of the song, “She’s So Sensual.” Such positive response to the top-requested tune landed the group the opportunity to record their self-titled debut CD on the independent label, Neuro-Feed Records. Sold and distributed primarily through consignment shops and at live performances, and promoted primarily in only 12 east coast regions, the CD sold out all of its initial pressing and managed to gain 15 Top-40 college radio positions on over 180 stations.

Enlisting the talents of upstart producer Phil Palazzolo, (who’s credits include Radio 4 and The New Pornographers, and who believed in the band so greatly that he turned down an engineering gig on Pope John Paul II’s last world tour to produce the album), has proven to be a happy marriage, successfully capturing the essence of the band’s energetic live fusion of grit and polish.

The finished results are impressive: 10 instantly accessible pop melodies juxtaposed by a cohesive lyrical theme that addresses such personal issues as faith, isolation, and the pangs of growth. “Undertow,” the album’s powerful opening track, attacks the issue of false prophecy (a recurring theme in This Island Earth’s catalogue) and its potential to breed hatred and separatism. “Pool of Contradictions” denounces “worldly advice” in favor of real-life experience. “Up and Down,” “Madeline’s Watching,” and “My Love,” all confront the trials and tribulations of relationships and the inner child that can sometimes affect their outcome.

“This Island Earth” is another pop band that doesn’t sacrifice melody for style,” Sounding more British than Longuyland, its themes run from demagoguery to personal relationships, and the band will often remind you of the Beatles. Their songwriting craftsmanship is laced with tart harmonies and cutting-edge riffs.”
