Theres a Pirate in the Family
Spanning three-hundred years and multiple generations of the Timble family, this adventure begins in sixteenth century England with the birth of Will Timble, first-born son of William and Jessica Timble. The plot thickens through the endeavors of Will’s father to provide for his young family with his skill as a blacksmith and the forging iron, skills he learned in his father’s shop as a boy.
A series of events set William in great favor with the wealthy and powerful Lord Braithe-Waite beginning with the rescue of the Lord’s young daughter from the flood-swollen river next to his smithy.
On an errand to Bristol to retrieve a load of iron for his smithy, William saves a young Chinese slave boy from a beating by the cruel slave master and then buys him for three shillings, thinking to train him in a craft as a free man. Mai Li turns out to be, not a boy, but a young woman with wondrous knowledge from “The Eight Books of Fate and Wisdom” which contains the secrets of a deadly martial art known as White Tiger Kenpo and Chinese Medicine and other ancient knowledge collected over centuries. The reader finds himself in the midst of a page turner that establishes the mystery through a special tool chest built like a Chinese puzzle box, which at sea holds Will’s tools but also holds hidden treasures he obtained during his high seas adventure as the pirate in the family.
A hurricane thrusts us forward three-hundred years into present day Florida and the lives of JW Timble and his younger sister Katie, whose father had recently been killed in Iraq. Circumstances have JW and Katie spending a summer vacation with their Grandpa Jim, their dad’s father. Here we are launched right back into the mystery of the special tool chest and unknown pirate treasures it contains. Only this time, the thugs aren’t pirates, but a pair of dishonest antique dealers and their hired flunkies. Grandpa and his friends use modern technological know how and his skill in White Tiger Kenpo Jujits to thwart the sleazy villain’s attempts to steal the priceless old sea chest and it’s hidden treasures. With the help of JW and Katie and his partners, Grandpa discovers how to work the puzzle and open the chest to discover the rich hoard of treasure left to them by the Pirate in the Family.
There’s a Pirate in the Family is written to include a younger audience of eight to fifteen years of age and those to whom English is the second language, yet this captivating story woven with simplicity still manages to weave an intricate plot that holds the interest of a seasoned adult reader as well. It is unique, charming, and well worth the exciting and fun read.
