Legend spoke of Prince Sang Nila Utama who saw a majestic creature while hunting on the island of Temasek. His chief minister told him that it was a lion. Believing it was a good omen, he chose to build a city there and call it Singapura (Lion City). However, lions were not known to have lived on that island. So, was the creature really a lion?
Many centuries later, three individuals from that very island came together on 15th September 2008 with a purpose - to share their passion for music. Being inspired by the legend, they call themselves ''The Lion Story.''
The band''s lead guitarist, Haffiz Hussin, is a graduate from Yamaha Music School where he took formal guitar lessons. Drawing inspiration from rock and blues guitarists such as Jimmie Vaughan, Chuck Berry and Buddy Guy, Haffiz''s solos can be heard cutting smoothly through songs like knife through butter.
Their drummer, Khair Osman, was a patriotic Regimental Police Officer during his army days and is now marching to the sounds of rock, pounding away like an invasive battalion.
Haramain Osman (a.k.a Amin), who is the band''s lead vocalist and bassist, studied music production and is a self-professed gear junkie. He is also an up-and-coming music producer / sound engineer in the local music scene and was responsible for helming "The Lion Story EP" where he played an integral role in shaping the sound of the band in the record.
So what do they sound like? Despite their vast musical differences, the members share a common ground when it comes to the genre of music that rings clearly in their hearts - Pop Rock. Blending the infectious sounds from bands they''ve heard like The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Weezer, The Lion Story are set to pull you deep into their pages with their positive vibes, good-natured spirit, and songs which are filled with sweet harmonies and catchy melodies.
Some of the band''s notable achievements include :
- Being chosen by renowned local music producer, Don Richmond, to be part of
''The Apprenticeship Programme'' organised by NOISE Singapore.
- "Something''s Going On feat. Don Richmond" was written in collaboration with their mentor and the song soon found its way into the playlist of local radio station 98.7FM.
- Their second song, "Fill You In", was chosen as the official soundtrack for NOISE Singapore''s commercial which was featured on TV Mobile, The Heeren, Suntec City, radio and television.
- "Segala Yang Kau Impikan", which is the band''s bonus teaser for the Malay music industry, has been played on RIA 89.7FM.
The band kick-started their journey by playing at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre and releasing their 7-track EP on 8th March 2009.
