Lemming is an indie rock band that formed in Zanesville, Ohio in 2000. Corey Bruns, Dustin Rouan and Julie Zylinsky makeup the band. Their style of indie/alternative rock music is heavily influenced by punk and grunge rock, and while highly melodic, is capable of being tremendously abrasive at the same time. Corey is the band''s songwriter/singer and has a sometimes desperate, sometimes nonchalant delivery. He has typically written songs about love interests, failed relationships, politics, and atheism.

Formation: Lemming''s history began when Dustin Rouan and Corey Bruns met in 2nd grade at Westview Elementary. Dustin soon introduced Corey to the grunge music of the 90s Nirvana and punk rock such as the Sex Pistols, and the pair eventually started to take guitar lessons. They found a drummer and formed Pen15 in 1998. Around 2001 Corey started to focus on his own music and broke off from the band to perform solo acoustic shows as Landen (his middle name).

The pair teamed up again in 2002 to form Lemming. Dustin was the original on and off drummer. The other drummers included Scott Simmons, Ian Scott, & Braden Bankes but Dustin remained with the band whenever a drummer was needed but focused full time as frontman of Pen-15. Lemming also included bassists Andy Kennedy and Danny Lentz at different times after Danny left in 2006. The band was a two-piece, guitar & drums, up until 2008 when Julie Zylinsky joined. That was the same year that Dustin became the permanent drummer.

Julie joined after dating Corey for a couple of months. She had dated a bassist previously and picked up on all the songs in no time. She also plays keys on half of the songs adding another element to the band''s sound.

Recording and Dandelions: Nelson Heise, frontman of the Hit & Mrs, Monkey Juice and the Heise Bros, contacted Dustin offering to record us in he had his own studio and label, Choose To Loose Music. The band produced a 13 track album titled Dandelions after the song "Dandelions". Recorded, mixed and mastered by Nelson. The recording was funded by Corey for the amount of $150 for mastering and took one year to record. This is their third album, first studio album.

Musical style: Lemming is an alternative/indie rock band. The band explores a range of styles in their songs — although many songs are characterized by Corey''s lead vocals, with Julie''s feathery backing vocals (on songs such as "Untitled", "Hey You" and "Away From You"), Dustin''s pounding drums and Corey''s sometimes erratic guitar (on songs such as "Imperfect" and "Hallowed Crowd"). The band''s sound has an indie rock sound similar to that of the Stooges, Pavement and the Pixies.

Influences: Lemming draws influence from a range of artists and genres; each member came from a different musical background. When he first started writing songs for the Lemming, Corey says he was listening to nothing but Nirvana, the Pixies, and the Stooges. Nowadays he is listening heavily to Arcade Fire, Spoon and Elliott Smith.
Dustin, as mentioned above, listened to and 1990s grunge including Mudhoney and Nirvana and is currently listening to the Burning Brides and the Black Keys. Drummers who influenced him include Dave Grohl and Josh Freese. He also is the lead singer/songwriter & guitarist in Pen15.
Julie''s musical background is as a classical pianist; she was briefly lead singer in a band called Ginsberg in her teenage years. Her influences include Harvey Danger, Postal Service and Nine Inch Nails.

Songwriting and vocals: Lemming''s songs are composed and sung by Corey, whose songwriting style was characterized by a focus on relationships ("Away From You", "Dandelions"), politics of George W Bush ("Imperfect") and issues with popularity within the mainstream media ("Popular Populace"). He also wrote jokingly about getting into trouble with his mom for smoking pot ("Goat Song") and atheism while attending church ("Hallowed Crowd").

Covers: The band has played several covers live: the Stooges "TV Eye" & "Be Your Dog", Pavement "Cut Your Hair", the Cure "Just Like Heaven", Sex Pistols "Bodies", Nirvana "Lithium", Fiona Apple "Paper Bag", etc.

Instrumentation: In terms of instrumentation, Lemming is a three-piece rock band. Corey, the group''s frontman, is the rhythm guitarist and uses a Washburn BT-2 Maverick Series, with a Randall RG75 combo amp. Julie, the bassist and keyboardist in the band, plays a Ibanez short scale bass and a Casio CTK-496 keyboard through a Randall RB100 combo amp. Dustin, the drummer, plays a 5-piece Pearl drumkit.
