I’ll admit it: three studio albums and one live project deep, I’m an unwavering Future supporter. But, I’m also extremely critical about what I listen to, particularly whether the music is well married to the words. I’ve found that whether you’re into R&B, Rap, Hip-Hop or Spoken Word with an emphasis on the message or just looking to bump to a hot beat, all of that is encompassed in Future’s fourth studio album Spit Personality.
The album begins with an eager vibe where the beats take control of your system while maintaining a balance that doesn’t overshadow the words. Take for example “Truth Is” where Future’s flow merges together perfectly with the instrument-blaring melody.
“I’m a believer in pants that fit and right-size drawers… I wake up everyday and put on my perfections with my flaws… I don’t play dress-up for applause ‘cause I know that my outfit don’t got nothing to do with yours… but, some folks can’t help but try and show off… and, please believe, it’s their loss… ‘cause make-up don’t make you who you want to be… it’s just Maybelline… just make believe…”

As the album continues to “Dance Poem” and “If The Shoe Fits”—both focused on negating the media and society’s emphasis on stereotypical acceptance—the advocate side of the artist becomes clear. The situations are displayed in a way that is thought-provoking and sometimes comical.
Mid-album, the tempo gradually winds down and the messages are provided at a smooth, saxophone like pace as evident by “My Observation”, a piece that explores spoken word poetry in its purest form versus the financial “craze” that some “artists” are making it. This sets a tone for “Ode To Nas (Just Getting Warm)” which gives clearance for my favorite piece on the album, “Before My Time (Back To The Future)”. The flow of this track is so soothingly melodic and further opens your mind up to receive the message in “Roller Coasters”.
“Every morning, I swear, I see you in the bathroom fixing your hair wearing my t-shirt and your he-man
underwear and I yell, ‘Come back…’ but you don’t hear me… so, I write it in the mirror’s steam… and you look
up… I look back… only to see your undies on a towel rack that I lied and said I couldn’t find ‘cause I didn’t
want to give them back… and I just want you back… like my chest in your back… breasts in my arms… hair in
my face… this is your favorite place, remember?... but, you don’t…”

“Roller Coasters” delves into the human capacity to love beyond a relationship’s termination in a three-dimensional sense that, despite having it explained to me, I still can’t completely wrap my mind around. Each time that I hear it, a different nuance is revealed in something as small as the placement of a pair of underwear. Of course, Future characteristically follows this condensed piece up with “Letter To My Wife 3”, and if you’ve heard the first two pieces in this epic conversation, no explanation needs to be given. If you haven’t, I assure you it’s better to experience it than to read about it.
Other tracks on the album include “Shooter”, “How To Murder An MC”, “Surgeon General”, “Umbrellas”, and “Arrogance (Righters Are For Ever)”.
Full circle, this album gives the quality and intensity of work that Future supporters have come to fondly appreciate, while creating an absolute introduction for newcomers.
