I thank the Lord for music for I cannot imagine what our world would be without the gift of music.
I am Mark Roberts from the twin island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago (Trinidad to be specific) W.I. the most southerly of the Caribbean Islands lying north east of the South American country of Venezuela.
I have loved music from my youth and that love intensified with adulthood. At the age of 12 during Christmas celebrations when most kids my age would be begging for toys like cars, trucks or guns I would always ask for a mouth-organ. This would be my request year after year. Somehow I had the ability to play any Christmas Carol I heard on the radio on my mouthorgan.
In 1975, my self and some other youths in our community of Laventille, east of our capital city Port of Spain, decided to form a Steelband the Steelpan is the national instrument of my country ( It is the only acoustic musical Instrument Invented during the 20th century.)
After the formation of this band Music Makers I somehow emerged as the arranger. I can’t recall the circumstances which lead to me being elected but if I had to make a guess I would say it was because in 1970 five years prior to the formation of our band I had joined the legendary Desperadoes Steel Orchestra which is also situated in my community. This was the beginning of my musical journey. I started on the Guitar Pan and later in 1978 moved to the Double Tenor and that has been my instrument ever since.
My association with Desperadoes afforded me the opportunity to tour extensively. I have travelled to Cuba with the Caribbean Festival of Arts, Barbados at Holders, Barbados- with Luciano Pavarotti, Bahamas, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Nigeria, and The United Kingdom. In USA to Carnegie Hall with Skitch Henderson & The New York Pops, Apollo Theatre, Atlanta, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Miami at Key West with Jimmy Buffet, Philadelphia at The Freedom Theatre, San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Performing Arts Center and to Washington at Lincoln Center.
Under the leadership of the late great Rudolph Charles and master arranger “Sir “Clive Bradley I was given an informal music education which cannot be expressed in words.
Now because of this union I acquired a little knowledge of music theory, however since music is a living thing every day is one of learning.
After my informal introduction to music I strived to enhance my knowledge of this beautiful art form with the help of teach your self books.
In 2001 I enrolled for a certificate in music program at the University of The West Indies (UWI) https://www.tradebit.comustine Campus which I successfully completed in 2004.
I am presently attached to the Ministry of Education teaching music theory and Pan at the secondary school level.
I recently made an attempt at composing, my first piece which was publish in 2006 called “Clive Gone” in honour of the genius Clive Bradley who died in November 2005, my second piece, “Celebrating Crawl” which was composed for our 2009 Carnival celebration in February was to honour the memory of our legendary Nine -Bass player Frank “Crawl” Findley who died in June 2008.
I say thanks to the Creator for the privilege and opportunity to experience the greatness of the late Clive “Brados” Bradley and for his inspiration in putting together these compositions I hope you enjoy.
