Nic Armstrong grew up in the small town of Mooretown, Ontario located along the St. Clair River close to the American border. With it''s close proximity to the U.S., Nic''s hometown had many unique characteristics for such a tiny place. For instance, there was an abundance of international radio stations that offered a wide variety of music. Growing up Nic was surrounded by the music of such staples as Elvis Presley, The Beatles (as well as other British invasion artists), Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, David Bowie, Motown and the list goes on. All of these artists would come to shape Nic''s musical interests, tastes, and writing.
On weekend visits to his grandparents, Nic found his way to their piano. His fascination with the instrument led to formal piano training. In turn, the piano became a gateway to many other instruments, and Nic soon discovered the organ, trumpet, and finally, the guitar. Along with learning each new instrument, Nic''s passion for music began to grow. Nic was inspired to play songs by numerous great artists, a process that would eventually lead to his own song writing.
In his late teens, Nic formed a band called Hidden Value. The band put out a 4 song EP and gave Nic an excellent opportunity to work on his live performance. Through a series of line-up changes, Hidden Value morphed into a group called Set In Stone. Set in Stone recorded a full-length, self-titled album that gave rise to a series of Canada wide tours. During this time Nic was commissioned to write the Commonwealth Games theme song for which Hamilton, Ontario made a bid. Nic & Set in Stone performed the theme song, as well as other originals, in front of a packed audience at Copps Coliseum in 2004. In Nic''s opinion, “It was an amazing experience getting to play in such a professional venue with an electric audience. It was exciting to be a focal part of the Commonwealth Games bid experience.”
After years of touring the country with Set in Stone, Nic eventually decided to take an opportunity to branch out on his own. A fateful meeting with producer and musician Carl Jennings (Speck/Jennings & Freedom Train) would give Nic the exact vehicle to make his solo dreams a reality. "Carl and I clicked musically right from the start," Nic recalls. Nic got more deliberate with his writing style and composed dozens of songs during brain storming sessions with Carl at Westmoreland Recording studio.
Once a line-up of focused and purposeful songs was selected, the recording process began. Both Nic & Carl played a majority of the instruments, although they also acquired the talented Jeff Heisholdt (The Trews) to play keys and the infamous Gormley brothers, Matt and Chris of Daylight for Deadeyes, to play guitar and drums respectively on several tracks. Nic was entranced with every minute of the experience. “Working with Carl (Jennings) was outstanding because he taught me about the entire music making process from initial songwriting, to recording, to production. Carl is an extremely knowledgeable producer, the best, and his stable of world-class musicians has been an unbelievable asset.”
Recently, Nic finished his self-titled, debut album - recorded at Westmoreland Studios, and mixed by John Nazario (mix engineer - Nelly Furtado) at Iguana Studios, Toronto.
Nic''s album blends the classic rock sounds of the Beatles, with the earnest vocal appeal of Tom Petty and the sophisticated cool of the White Stripes. As a live performer, Nic is entertaining, charismatic, and versatile. He has a variety of live shows in the works including everything from an intimate acoustic format to rocking clubs with a live band.
