From the ethers of soulful Santa Barbara, California comes the band Magistir: authentic, timeless, rocking and unique. Darin Fiechter (fick-ter): rhythm guitar /background vocals/vocals /songwriter. This goofy-foot surfer and business owner was born in Santa Barbara and raised primarily in the Santa Ynez Valley. A few of his songs are included on the band’s roster as well.

David Loeppke (lep-key): Piano/Keyboards/background vocals. Also a songwriter, he''s played in several Santa Barbara bands, co-writing a song KTYD radio station featured locally by request, called "Breakaway" with the band "Cavalier."

Song Reviews

“Up There”

A soulful, out-of-body track that reaches into your heart and plucks a chord. Reminiscent of Ron Sexsmith, it is one of those songs you hear once and love for a lifetime.

“How Could I?”

This poignant, self-reflective ballad gives a bow to those who give up their lives for our freedom, and questions what we do with the honor. This song transports you to that place where only great music can take you.

- Blake Beltram (author of A Perfect Father)

HER MAGiSTiR’S SECRET SERVICE: Santa Barbara’s newest supergroup, MAGiSTiR, is ready to unleash a whole lotta sweet sounds at Rocks on Thursday (yes, tonight, May 25!). Formed from the nucleus of perennial songster Robin Howe McIlrath’s eponymous band, MAGiSTiR has added Dave Loeppke on keys and Darin Fiechter on second guitar, plus a shiny new drummer, bassist, and lead guitarist to fill out their classic Santa Barbara sound, which brings to mind Toad the Wet Sprocket, but brings with it a gust of fresh pop-rock breeze that’s all their own. Check out their Myspace (https://www.tradebit.com for some sample tunes, then come to Rocks at 7:30 p.m. for the real deal. Also appearing are power-rockin’ Entoven and kooky-rockin’ Earl. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. — Brier Random

FIESTA À LA ROCKS: Rocks’ Fiesta activities begin on Thursday with quintessential fiesta-style Mexican music led by…Santa Barbara’s modern rock masters Magistir, who describe themselves as a “persuasive, magical stirring of the soul,” lead that evening’s jam session, which is also featuring Ojai’s big-hair-rocking Shades of Day and some solo stuff from Goleta’s Kris Angelis. That night also includes Soul Biscuit, known for belting out classics by artists like the Jackson 5 and The Temptations in a garage-rock style. Dylan Schmidt, Change, and 7-FI are all booked for Saturday, so expect killer drums from Schmidt, ’80s party music covers by 7-FI, and beats and rhythms you’ve probably heard sampled by some of your favorite current pop artists in their original form by Change.  — Hudson Hornick

K-LITE: Contemporary rock, though often corny and grossly sentimental, has its place in music history. Its authenticity, timelessness, and rhythmic edge make the tedium of the retail workday and forced elevator schmoozing quick and painless. Contemporary rock even has a niche in the film industry for enhancing any angst-ridden conflict with its flare for the dramatic. So when powerful contemporary rock meets the “ethers of soulful Santa Barbara,” by way of the band MAGiSTiR, the outcome is downright magical. MAGiSTiR, a collection of three part-time musicians, blends the sounds of Jeff Buckley and the Goo Goo Dolls with an endearing sincerity that makes you root for their continued success — whether or not you’re a fan of contemporary rock. They are joined by alternative, contemporary singer/songwriter Zach Madden. Pay homage to honest tunes with MAGiSTiR and Madden at their CD release party and Surfrider benefit on Thursday, January 31, at SOhO (1221 State St.). Testimonials

Email from MAGiSTiR fan about the song “Up There”
...it was the first time I heard your band, and yes I thought you guys were wonderful! But you played me a song that really changed me.
I have never had a song change me, I never had a song haunt me in such a good way that I truly believe it helped save me. The words to that song hit me like a ton of bricks. At a time when I really didn’t want to live anymore. When the pain was too much for me to want to wake up each morning, when the emptiness that over took my heart was to the point where I spent each and every day feeling numb, I heard the words to that song and it changed me.
Love,
MAGiSTiR Fan

....Your music at Harvest was awesome and sounded fantastic. Everyone really enjoyed it and it sent our very positive vibrations on such an ashy weather day. "Imagine" by John Lennon is a most treasured song to me and your rendition was splendid!

Thanks again,
Yums
