Details:
Abdoulaye Diabate, greatest Jaliya singer in America releases ‘Sara,’ the long-awaited CD on Completely Nuts/Mulatta Records. Declared the “… most talented African singer currently resident in the United States” by NPR’s Banning Eyre, Abdoulaye “Djoss” Diabate is a composer, arranger and leader whose path spans traditional and modern Malian music. Previously resident of Cote d’Ivoire, he played, and toured, with World-famous Ensemble Koteba, Les Trois Gos, Bembeya Jazz, Kasse Mady and Salif Keita among others.

In the US since the mid-nineties, he has performed in a wide array of contexts, from the traditional to the modern, from the community hall to Carnegie Hall, such as with kora player Mamadou Diabate and Fula Flute; and with jazz men Don Byron, Peter Apfelbaum and the bands Source, Kelenia and others. He was featured on Smithsonian Folkways recordings "Badenya: Manden Jaliya in New York City" (2002) and Mali Lo: Stars of Mali (2003).

In “Sara,” Abdoulaye makes a complete return to his roots, drawing upon a lifetime of experience and his new found American-immigrant perspective to lay down a definitive interpretation of the tradition. Accompanying artists include virtuosi Yacouba Cissoko (kora), Famoro Dioubate (bala), Djekoria Mory Kante (guitar), Makane Kouyate and Koulipe (percussion). They are joined by flutist Sylvain Leroux, bassist Peter Fand and vocalist Mai Kouyate, whose choruses delivers a spirited response to Diabate’s lead vocal mastery.

The tracks span the range from praise to epic songs addressing timeless themes. For ex-ample: Korossi, a traditional invocation of good will and honesty among people; Sara, a ballad about a woman who challenges an arranged marriage, and Lansine, a praise song for a generous patron.
