Usually rock stars plunge into a partying frenzy, and subsequent rehab, after being whipped off their feet on the worldwide tour, riding the success of their latest killer album, but the reverse seems true for Jack Fernley, lead singer of Hashbang Spacestar (aka #! *).
After spending his formative years in the Blue Mountains mountain biking and playing the pipe organ, Fernley completed degrees in Science and Commerce, lost his direction, and wound up spending several years as a corporate banker in the Sydney CBD.
In an attempt to escape the drudgery of the office, where his ability to communicate with others was limited to a couple of minutes each day, he compensated by spending 7 days a week letting loose outside of the office. “Each night would end the same trashy way no matter how far I tried to push the limits. Finally, I came to a realization that, not only was I not in control of my life in the office, but I’d lost control outside of it too. I couldn’t handle it, my body couldn’t handle it either, and my health really felt the repercussions, hard.”
Fernley assessed his life and made huge changes to return to living a healthy life, while writing songs for Hashbang SpaceStar''s "3 Pack" & "Let It Be Known", which contain rock-out gems, “Here to Stay” & “Buy now & borrow” & and dark and soulful beauties like “Good night baby sleep tight”. “When I think of where I’m at now, and think of how else I might have come here more easily, I realise I could have worked less and enjoyed life more. At least now I’m on the right track, and I’m young”. Hashbang Spacestar are certainly emerging as mature minded artists with direction from the word go.
The "3 Pack" 3-track CD and forthcoming EP, "Let It Be Known" were recorded in India during February and March this year: "We went to India to soak up the culture while recording the songs we''d written for our first EP. We''d brought some laptops and mics etc and we bought a guitar and keyboard there; the whole idea was that accommodation might be cheap and we''d be under less pressure to record quickly. We were wrong! We ended up running out of money a lot quicker than we thought. We recorded in Kashmir near the Himalayas, Rajasthan and Goa. Actually, in Rajasthan we barely recorded, it was more sight seeing. It was an interesting experience, pretty hectic, but we managed to get the EP recorded, and we finally got to relax with a bit more time at the beaches in Goa.”
