Details:
Refugees and Asylum seekers from Ethiopia, East Timor, Sri Lanka, Bosnia, El Salvador, China, Chile and Russia lift their voices on Scattered People. This internationally acclaimed album is a rich and soulful expression of humanity and hope, expressing the pain and patience of individuals united by the experiences of their past and their desire for a peaceful future. All profits from the sale of Scattered People go to the Refugee Claimants Support Centre in Brisbane, Australia, where the album was produced.

Many of these people had spoken out for human rights in their countries and incurred persecution, torture and death threats. Applying for departure documents from the very government from whom they were fleeing was unsafe. Crossing countries to arrive at a refugee camp was also fraught with danger.

They speak of their distress and their nostalgia at having to leave their homes, their families and their familiar culture. Their shared thoughts are sung in ''HOMETOWN''

When invited to speak of the crisis point where leaving became the only safe option, there was silence ... it was too difficult, too painful to put into words. The instrumental track ''ALANGKOLAM'' (chaos) - Sri Lankan represents these disturbing memories.

The terrors associated with escaping were cushioned in their desperation for a safe and free future. Their collective desire is for ''SWEET FREEDOM''

Once out of the environment of fear, it is inevitable that many look back to count the costs - the loss of the innocent, especially the children tragically caught up in the conflict haunts ''LABARIK SIRA HOTU'' (all the children) - East Timorese.

All have numerous ''triggers'' that remind them of what they had been through. Ironically, this torment brings them together - there is comfort in the feeling of connectedness that comes from all of this. ''RAIN'' represents their shared struggles.

The Bosnian Community Choir were invited to contribute to the album. Their own refugee journey from danger to a place of safety was featured in ''PUT U NEPOZNATO'' (a place unknown) in Bosnian.

''FORSAKEN CHILD'' is a poem composed by a group of Brisbane asylum seekers reflecting their sense of helplessness within their desire to contribute positively to this new world. Language problems and lack of employment opportunities take away their capacity to be ''bread-winners'' for their families, making them dependent on others for sustenance. They feel "like a child again".

Dependence on the broader community is the uncomfortable reality for all of the participants. However, the positives associated with this are explored in ''NEED ONE ANOTHER''

Holding on to their hopes for life to get better while still recovering from traumas associated with their past has meant the development of their capacity for ''RESILIENCE'' - in their case, a survival skill.

Disillusionment with the long processing of their applications for protection, the hostility of what seems to be the majority of Australians towards them, political and media-fuelled demonising together with their lack of access to the Social Security system, the Health system, the Education system and their denial of work permission underpins ''SENZENI'' (what have I done?) from Zimbabwe

A plea for compassion together with a salute to those who have been in support is the theme of ''STAND WITH US''

Scattered People was produced with the assistance of Sweet Freedom, an independent, not-for-profit record label that advances social justice and human rights, and celebrates creativity and artistic expression. All profits from the sale of Normal Days go to the Refugee Claimants Support Centre.
