Sanguine – The Word.

In the beginning, there was Tea. Then there was Sanguine, which began life when singer Tarin Kerry, sick of a stagnant local music scene, decided to start a band whilst at Exeter University in the UK. A canvas of scruffy musicians and extensive auditioning first discovered Nick Magee, an old college friend who became the band’s guitarist and backing vocalist. After suffering some interesting auditions, Tom Sherwood was recruited on bass, and American-born Matt Feld on drums was finally found to fill the rhythm section. The band members then vanished into the wilds of Cornwall in the Sang-Mobile and in the dank surroundings of their rehearsal rooms began the long process of writing and rehearsal. Two microwaves died during this time and will be missed.

Whilst at the band room psychological warfare began between the band, starting out as small pranks but ending with their eventual bonding as a group. Matt’s fondness for hitting things, whilst initially a bit startling, was put to good use on the drums. His ultra-high metabolism and violent temper means he has to work off the excess as a ninja during the night hours. Nick’s fear of fruit, once revealed, was caringly dealt with by kidnapping his guitar and adorning it with supportive phrases and words of comfort in fruit-sticker form. He calmed down after a few days. The most worrying revelation came in the form of Tom and his subconscious desire to injure himself and his hands before every gig. Whilst slowly being brought under control, a certain Rum incident did raise some questions to his safety. Tarin, as the catalyst for this strange bunch of people, quickly went about making sure that they all respected her authority. Talk of failure was met with threats of being pimped out and made to take part in a homo-erotic Sanguine calendar. This was the kind of talk that got their attention and kept them in line which, along with tea and biscuits, has made them into the tight knit group that they are today.

During the band’s development the song writing evolved a unique style far beyond what was originally intended. Tarin and Nick quickly turned into song writing zombies and countless ideas were sacrificed along the way as this new style was refined and expanded.

After a string of raging performances and stunning reviews, Sanguine quickly developed a reputation for energetic and intimidating live shows. This impact was not just restricted to audiences; other bands were left stunned that a female fronted act could carve something new into the alternative rock and metal scene. On two occasions the headlining bands refused to go on stage after seeing Sanguine’s show.

As testament to their furious energy and commitment to the cause, Sanguine fans take pride in mosh pit injuries and many carry their scars, bruises and casts as badges of honour. The band fear endorsing this behaviour due to the very real danger of crippling a generation, but as a token of respect they still fondly keep tabs of who damaged what – and all injuries here are listed bar concussions: 100’s of bruises and minor injuries, 6 major failed crowd jumping incidents, 4 black eyes, 2 Broken arms, 1 Broken nose, 1 fit, many forcibly removed piercings, 1 lesbian “incident” (Tarin doesn’t want to talk about it but the others frequently do) and innumerable nail scratch marks suffered by band members. So, if you decide to stand at the front at the next Sanguine gig you were warned!

The physical release of the Live Consume Drive EP, available from CD Baby includes a video of Live Consume Drive and video footage of Simplify shot live at The Phoenix Theatre in Exeter UK.
