Wow! With 7 Detroit Music Award nominations for 2009, Carolyn''s music features the best of Detroit in another world! Catchy, hypnotic, world avant/garde music coupled in a pop/rock stance of a powerful, strong female artist with a sensational show and songs you can''t stop singing... On a Steinway grand piano or with her bright red keyboard, she''s playing European gypsy music; then Carolyn''s tribal dance melodies compel as she holds her heavy, tough acoustic guitar, a la Ani Di Franco. This CD is special, with insinuating, sensual melodies, taking hold with Carolyn''s beautiful, smooth, fluid, electric voice, Scott Dailey''s stalking guitar playing, and the violins, chimes, piano, accordian-organ and electric sounds of Detroit poking through to mesmerize the listener. Besides Carolyn''s work with Patti Smith, Luis Resto and David McMurray, Carolyn has worked with the best of the best - all over Detroit and the world. Check https://www.tradebit.com or just google..
Co-produced with STS Products in Ann Arbor in 2008, Carolyn Striho''s "Is This Me?" has received rave reviews and is a constant hit at shows everywhere. Hear Carolyn sing "Tiara", a mystery haunting of the girls down below the sea...beautiful classical electric viola by John Madison of the Detroit Symphony with beautiful background vocals...to "Ocean", pulsating, hypnotic, adventurous, wildly beautiful search...to "Enchante", an accordian-driven song of chance, kisses, and French and Italian persuasion - a huge crowd-pleaser! Finally, "Promised Land" is rocked out fuzztone Detroit beauty and progressive as hell, Carolyn''s vocals leading us to our own Promised Land...to the future we go.
From the Detroit Metro Times, review of "Is This Me?" "It takes some courage to title a new song "Promised Land" in 2008. Carolyn Striho''s "Promised Land" may be the one, however, that best expresses its message via its mood in no uncertain terms. It isn''t at all reminiscent of Springsteen''s hope-in-the-face-of-despair anthem in its tone, nor even the more cynical but still humorous "Promised Land" by one Mr. Chuck Berry as covered by Elvis Presley and thousands of others over the years. Striho''s "Promised Land" is dissonant electro-pop, with frightening stream-of-consciousness lyrics, appropriate for the zeitgeist following eight years of Bush. But it rocks nevertheless. And rock can also mean hope — even at this late date. "Is This Me?" is exceptionally good. The internationally renowned Detroit artist''s voice is, at turns, warm, rich, idiosyncratic and, at times, just plain (in a good way) eccentric. "Tiara" opens things on a violin-driven, downbeat, almost mournful but still melodically beautiful note. The appropriately titled "Ocean" is so Patti Smith influenced in its trippiness and mid-song chanting that it almost could be Patti Smith. And that''s meant as a compliment — a big one. "Enchante" opens with a calliope-driven instrumental musical interlude before the lyrics kick in and it becomes a clash between the sounds of Barnum & Bailey and gypsys, tramps and thieves. Good stuff. Four-and-a-half out of five, only because it leaves you wanting to hear more from this Motor City maven!
