WHO IS UP THE CREEK?

Lack of a drummer left them UP THE CREEK. A drummer was found but the name stuck.
Americana with a Pop-Rock edge, a little bit Country by way of the Southern Rock railroad, Classic Rock with a Slice of Metal. Some might say Alt-Country, but whatever you want to call it, it’s good, wholesome, debauchery fueled by beer and a burning desire to create.

UP THE CREEK formed in spring of 1999 in the small mining town of San Manuel, virtually on the eve of the Magma (BHP) copper mine shut-down. This shut-down sounded the death-knell for this small town copper industry, but out of this, UP THE CREEK was released upon the world. When Todd Myers (Vocals & guitar) and Robert New (vocals, guitar& bass) hooked up with Doug Cline (vocals, guitar, & harmonica) something clicked. The songs began to flow. The three spent the rest of ‘99 writing and recording demos of some 50 plus songs, some of which would appear on their debut CD, THE STORM IS HERE and their sophomore effort BARNBURNER. Back then finding a drummer was hard. Finding the right drummer was nearly impossible. After gigging around the area with various uncommitted drummers, they found themselves still debating a definitive name, and then, they found themselves drummer-less. A friend commented that they were “up the creek without a drummer” and rightly so.
In early 2000 Scott Spencer was tapped to take over the sticks. Scott is a drummer of incredible power. He is widely known for breaking cymbals, drum heads and other various drum parts while jamming on Metallica and Pink Floyd covers. Scott has played with various other garage bands but found himself the perfect fit for this small town group. Scott was able to incorporate his playing and arranging skills to good effect. His unique style provided a needed drive to early CREEK songs while also contributing writing to newer material.
With the group now complete, a unique sound began to emerge. The band’s sound is combined with intertwining guitars, longing harmonica passages, impassioned vocals, intricate bass lines, vivid imagery among lyrics and music and a kick-ass rumble underneath it all. Doug Cline’s haunting harmonica mixed with open guitar tunings, gives many of the songs their Americana, Pop/Rock edge and spacious feel. Todd Myers lends the perfect support for Doug’s acoustic guitar mastery. His Shred-like approach mixed with the Southern Rock influence decorates each song with powerful solos, delicate passages and slide work. Robert New’s extensive background in Modern Country Music and well as Classic Country & Western lends to CREEK’s rock solid rhythm. Robert’s ability to switch between Country and Rock on both guitar and bass makes him a very versatile musician. Scott Spencer’s pile driving drum work lends it Rock and Metal edge and driving feel to, what is the CREEK sound. Scott is also an extremely versatile musician, switching from driving rock to a country feel to light and delicate with nuances that sound like rain on a tin roof.
UP THE CREEK has always had a love affair with the studio. After all… writing, recording and all-out jamming is what makes music fun. Originally, UP THE CREEK started recording demos on an old Tascam 4 track recorder. Doug Cline’s mastery of this early technology gave rise to the band’s addiction to the studio. With the Tascam, a few mics, some effects and a lot of beer, Avenue Beeyatch Recording Studios was born. Studio B is a single bedroom turned into one of the most comfortable recording environments the band has ever been in. Nothing beats recoding at home unless you have millions to spend in a prestigious recording studio with the likes of Bob Rock or Rick Rubin. As UP THE CREEK has matured so has the technology and producing/ arranging prowess of its members. Avenue B. Studios is now the proud owner of Pro Tools recording software and various other plug-ins.
After nearly a decade together, many live gigs, recording sessions, re-recording sessions, spats, girlfriends/wives, hangovers and beer they are still working and creating new material. Other side projects have become available, day jobs sometimes take priority and other things tend to keep UP THE CREEK from touring but you can always bet, where there is a new riff, a few lyrics and beer you’ll find UP THE CREEK there… churning out tunes.
