Fran May ‘Pink Blues’

One album that reflects the life of one woman.

Fran May chose to create a music CD after discovering she could sing just over one year ago, aged 53. The music began as a cathartic release after three and a half years spent nursing her husband as he tried to fight his cancer.

Fran teamed up with Richard Newman in full appreciation of his myriad of extraordinary talents. Together they have worked at an exhausting pace, and in just over one year have produced an extraordinary arts album that reflect the 54 years of Fran’s life.

One of eight children, brought up in the Canadian Rockies until coming to England in the early sixties, Fran has been a mother of two, a painter, a photographer, a designer and web master, adding music to extend her pallet of expression. Richard was brought up in South London and has had an innovative forty-year career in the music industry. His musical contribution with his sometime, haunting lyrical guitar and often-inspired production ideas have resulted in a beautifully expressed piece of art on the highest level.

What is important about these albums is that although they are about one woman, a woman who has lived through all the changes in the feminist movement. Her life encapsulates the freedoms achieved by the actions a number of determined activists. Fran has traveled, worked, had children, experienced relationship problems, divorced and seen her husband die. Fran has always acted upon what she has come up against in a positive way.

Fran has achieved a great deal in her lifetime. The songs reflect personal events and thoughts, and although she is no different to a lot of women of her age, she is a voice, singing songs that a large number of women might well relate to.

In general, the songs relate to femininity as experienced by a now, older woman, and answer some of Fran’s own theories on the battle of the sexes. Life will always be complex, but basically the concern is the ongoing search for a sense of balance in relationships.

Fran enjoys her femininity, has enjoyed motherhood, has enjoyed working for a living, is proud of her achievements and loves the differences between men and women. She feels that we have reached a very interesting time, where recognition to do with equality still needs to be properly reflected in our legal systems and the freedom to negotiate with our partners first and foremost. Parenthood, for instance is still not properly addressed. There should be a greater flexibility in the work place that allows fathers to enjoy their children as much as the mothers, a personal negotiation between two consenting people who wish to procreate should be less defined by commerce. There is a need to look at both sides once again in the light of what has been achieved since the 70’s. There is time to achieve everything in an average lifetime.

In 2009 it is great to be a feminist, because ultimately it is great to be feminine. Feminism today means equality of the sexes; it is about enjoying the differences without barriers. There is the recognition that many women are still held back by economic, social and economic inequality, in the world as witnessed and photographed by Fran over the years, but at least we are on the right track in Western Society, with an ability to help others.

As Fran says at the end of one of her lyrics ‘Men’:

‘Women came to call them back
Please return to the lives we had
Sadly missed, held entwined
Stop the tension, end the line
Forward, ease the future
Working out our fears
Pursue the burden’
