“No money, no time, rock and roll doesn’t mind….”

Take 3 friends with a musical bond of more than 25 years. Mix in influences as varied as The Beatles, Queen, Van Halen, Southern Rock, country, and a little jazz. Blend in a hearty mixture of guitars, bass, drums, and vocals. Pour the mixture into an old multi-track cassette recorder. And what do you get? If you’re thinking these are the same old ingredients to the tired Garage Band recipe, you’re going to be pleasantly surprised! Because Midnight’s Slot Machine of Life is full of some very special ingredients: songs with great melodies, lyrics that you''ll just have to sing along with, hard driving guitars, excellent vocals, and enough rock to make you roll down your car windows to share it with the world like you did when you were a teenager.

“I’m like a razor blade swinging on a crowded elevator…”

Midnight was born in the early 80s, when three kindred spirits living in the Dallas, TX, area were introduced. Each of the new acquaintances played the guitar and had played in various bands around the Dallas area. The now twenty-somethings soon discovered they shared a common love of music and all things ROCK. Almost immediately, they began jamming together and learning about each other’s musical abilities. At the same time, they started writing their own tunes and lyrics and recording them on a multi-track cassette recorder. Their varied musical influences could be heard in the tracks they were laying down to tape. Sonny Hopper became the lead guitarist and brought his own original take on Van Halen’s guitar-centric sound to the band. David Vineyard took on the role of rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist. Heavily influenced by Queen, David concentrated on writing interesting lyrics, melodies, and harmonies. Jerry Renfro played bass and brought a southern flair to the band’s sound due to his background in playing southern rock and country. Drum duties were also handled by the various members of the band. They became quite adept at the recording process using “bouncing” to create intricate arrangements, big guitar sounds, and lush harmonies. Early fans of the band were impressed at the quality of Midnight''s growing song catalog. Armed with a healthy mix of original songs and classic rock staples, the band played its first gig in 1983.

“We swirled and swayed and dared this crazy world to go away…”

As the years went by, life got in the way of the music – families, jobs, the usual stuff that causes band members to move in and out of each other’s lives. The members of Midnight would sporadically play together over the years, but nothing solid ever materialized. Until the late 90s, when they hooked up again to write and record. Over the next couple of years, the band would get together almost every week in Sonny’s home studio. They would come up with a rhythm or guitar riff and build the structure of the song, then lay the various parts down on tape (minus vocals and lead guitar), mix the song down on cassette, and turn it over to David. David would then drive around for the next week listening to the tune and writing the melody and lyrics in his head. By the next rehearsal time, David would have the finished lyrics and then the band would lay down the lead vocal track, followed by the background vocals, and finally Sonny’s lead guitar work. They would then mix the song down, make a master of it, and move on to the next tune. The formula worked very well for the band as they wrote and recorded 50+ songs using the technique. The new songs ran the gamut of styles – rock, pop, jazz, and country. The lyrics were much more mature than the early days. The songs were much more structured and intricate. People who heard the new music fell in love with it and were very impressed at how polished it sounded. Midnight planned on rolling out the new songs to live audiences, but then life happened again and the band drifted apart. The music got filed away and put up with the guitars and the amps.

“You know life is like a gamble, it’s like everything’s a roll of the dice….”

Eventually, sitting on all these tapes of great songs got to be too much for David, and he decided to do something so the world could share in the fun of Midnight’s music. First, he began entering some of the songs in the Songdoor International Songwriting Contest and he found that other people, industry people, also enjoyed the music. In 2006, “All I Bleed”, a song written by David and recorded with the band, was a finalist in Songdoor’s rock category. In 2007, the song received an honorable mention and the judges said, “We STILL love this song.” Another of the band’s songs, “Slot Machine of Life” earned high marks in the 2008 contest and received the following comments from the judges, “This ROCKS. Angus Young (AC/DC) wishes he had written the intro. Really well-crafted rocker. We loved it.”

So, armed with all this positive feedback and with the encouragement of a good friend or two, David decided to “roll the dice” and dig out those old tapes and mix them down again, this time to a digital recorder. It was time for music lovers to find out what he and his bandmates knew all along – that Midnight has the tunes and people will enjoy hearing them. The result is the CD, “Slot Machine of Life.”

The next Midnight CD is already in the works and will be made up of some of the other songs recorded during the same sessions. The band members have been involved in other projects of late. Sonny played lead guitar on a CD for Dallas-based Naked Violet and has worked with several other bands over the years. David has released a solo CD, “Just Me-Volume 1,” and is hard at work on the follow up CD tentatively titled, “The Light In My Eyes.” Jerry continues to sing and play guitar and bass at his church.

And, lo and behold, Sonny and David dusted off their guitars recently to play their original songs at the Poetry Music Festival in Poetry, TX, in 2008. So, stay tuned for the next installment in the Midnight saga and enjoy the music!!
