Details:
Lou Gerrero, Bobby Berrios, Rich Handibode and Gabe Gerrero make up THE CHEATS, the most promising rock and roll band this country has seen in 20 years.

Rock & Roll. Those two words conjure up the most powerful and evocative images in the entire history of American music. Think smoke filled taverns on the South or West Side of Chicago nearly ablaze with tremendous displays of electrified Delta beats from legends named Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Albert King, Little Walter, Elmore James, Buddy Guy, Magic Slim and so many more. Imagine Elvis in 1954, The Beatles in 1964, Springsteen in 1974, Bon Jovi in 1984, and Pearl Jam in 1994.

Great Rock & Roll is now also synonymous with The Cheats. Though the golden era of Classic Rock is long past with many of its key players forgotten or retired, this band stands tall in the current generation of rock and roll performers that honor the tradition and spirit of classic American rock music.

An entertainer and guitarist, Lou Gerrero fully understands the debt he owes his predecessors and how important it is to carry on the rock and roll tradition with integrity and sincerity. “We weren''t trying to create a new, original, wave of music,” Lou says with his characteristic humility, “Rob, Rich, Gabe, and I weren''t trying to get recognized as the Beatles, U2, or REM. We’re were just playing what was handed down to us with heart and a respect for the past. I have a lot of admiration for the guys who inspired me to love rock and roll— I''ve played with lots of other great musicians—I learned to love classic rock and roll and I don’t feel it has to be changed to fit any new sound or style of the week.”

Excited and appreciative classic rock fans gravitated to The Cheats playing in live performance because of their stylistic link to the classic rock stylings of the past. But The Cheat''s music also holds enormous appeal for casual fans of rock and roll and even novices. “I’m always trying to find that fine line of not compromising the integrity of the classic rock music I love,” Lou says, “and yet still make it sound cool and relevant for the element of the crowd that may not be familiar with great classic rock sounds.” The Cheats always kept their audience in mind, mixing up the tempos just enough to keep audiences excited with their slow, medium-tempo and high energy numbers.

Lou Gerrero''s energetic stage presence was surpassed only by the heart and positive vibe he brought to his music. His powerful, emotional songwriting style and classic rock guitar playing are quite different from a lot of what passes for rock and roll these days. Guitarist, Rich Handibode has been with Lou from the beginning and his incandescent guitar playing, explosive high energy volleys, and classic rock riffs prove their worth during every performance, standing out and complementing Lou’s rougher guitar style. Robert Berrios is the band’s Bassist and co-songwriter, and his groove-laden and focused playing pushes the Cheat''s sound to rock and roll perfection. Gabe Gerrero is the band’s Drummer, laying down immaculate beats that are both fiery and in the pocket.

For The Cheats, the rise to the A-List of classic rock styled musicians out of New York had its beginnings right in Lou’s boyhood home of Far Rockaway. “If it wasn’t for Six String Willie McCrae I wouldn’t be playing music. My brother and I started to watch him play guitar every day after school when I was about 13 years old. Willie was the janitor for the building I was living in at the time. He was a great musician, playing blues, rockabilly, classic rock, and his own stuff. He pointed me in the right direction.” Too young for legal admission into clubs, aspiring rock star Lou and the rest of THe Cheats learned what they could by watching the venerable Six String Willie McCrae play his guitar in the Apartment buildings community room. “My first influence was Six String because he gave me a historical perspective of American music. I learned about the Blues, Dylan, Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Beatles, The Stones, all the greats from Willie. My brother and some of our other friends happened to be in a great place at a great time. I really didn’t know who Willie really was. I found out how respected he was after I started playing with him and doing research.” How respected? McCrae was one of the true pioneers of electric blues in the ’50s and ‘60s, an acclaimed star in Europe but always criminally undervalued in the States.

The Cheat''s musical schooling began in earnest when they began to perform on the Long Island/New York music scene in the late ‘70’s and most of the ‘80’s. The Cheats became one of Rockaway, New York''s premier original acts. The Cheats also performed in Long Island Music Festival competitions, and throughout the Tri-State area. “ The classic rock sound was always in my heart” he recalls. “I played 50''s rock and pop hits from the 60’s but Six String Willie always kept me grounded in classic rock stylings.

Between 1980 and the late 90’s, The Cheats continued to perform at venues in New York, recording original music and dreaming of getting a record deal. The Cheats never recieved the recognition they deserved, but they did record one of the most emotional, energetic, thoughtful, and awesome records in rock history, LONG, LONG, JOURNEY and it is available to you now.

Lou Gerrero knows that The Cheats are arguably the best unknown band of the 80''s. “The Cheats are one of the greatest bands in the world."“Rock & Roll is the greatest music in the world” Lou says smiling, “I should know, I’ve been saved by Rock and Roll.”
