Chelsea Martinez and Cameron Martinez are two uniquely talented sisters who have been performing on stage since they were toddlers. What may be most unique in the pop music world is the emergence of two sisters who share the stage as naturally as if they had some invisible connection. Being sisters give Chelsea and Cameron an unusual blend of vocal sounds unattainable by other singers. Their harmonies are so perfectly blended that the listener may have difficulty knowing where one voice starts and the other ends. You might say their extraordinary talent and beauty are in their genes. Their mother is Connie Harness-Speck, a former Miss Pennsylvania and talent winner at the Miss America Scholarship Pageant. Between raising two talented daughters and managing their blossoming careers, Connie has been in demand for appearances because of her beautiful soprano voice and repertoire of classical and standard American music. However, her primary focus is working tirelessly to champion the dreams of two very gifted performers.
Ever since they could remember, Chelsea, now 20, and Cameron, 17, were writing lyrics to songs and composing tunes. They have now written more than 200 songs from which they selected twenty-two for the recording studio. Even when they were children, their mother could not resist her adorable daughters’ wishes to join her on stage. It soon became obvious to everyone that nothing was going to hold them back from their burning desire to become singers.
Their mom’s experience and guidance have played a key role in shaping their talent. The girls have a natural instinct, rare among pop performers, to absorb the best influences from other successful people. They haven’t followed their mother as pageant contestants or in classical music, or on the cover of magazines, although no one doubts they could pursue any of those paths. They’ve chosen instead to concentrate on their own performing careers. But, they are frequent performers at pageants and have a deep appreciation for all types of music, from classical, to country, to hip hop, but their youthful appeal, high energy, and ability to dance to driving beats make Chelsea and Cameron naturals for the contemporary music scene.
After years of community and professional musical theater, modeling agencies, dance studies, voice lessons, call backs at Disney auditions, performing as soloists and as a duet, plus the accumulating pile of songs they’ve written, they are more than ready for prime time. The time is finally right for Chelsea and Cameron to take it to a whole new professional level. The response from music industry pros has been more than encouraging and it led to producer Warren J. McRae and Black Opal Entertainment in New York City. McRae’s association with pop and R&B artists include Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, and Chaka Khan. When the Martinez sisters arrived at Black Opal’s studio, McRae put the girls on a daily work schedule writing, rehearsing, arranging, working the harmonies, and recording. The very first day they began work, he checked on them a few short hours later to see if they’d made any progress or even gotten started writing their first song at the studio. Chelsea gleefully announced, “We’re finished!” When they finished their recording sessions at the studio, they had completed five fully mastered songs designed to capture the infectious beat, a special blend of pop and hip hop, and a duet unequivocally honest, pure, and unique. After adding four additional songs written and recorded at a studio near their home in Central Pennsylvania, they set out to conquer the music business and bring their first album to market.
The demo was considered so good that A&R departments of Universal and Epic Records contacted Chelsea and Cameron and indicated that they were placing them on a talent watch list. What that meant was that the A&R people wanted to see more of them on stage, getting exposure with audiences and building a following that now numbers in the thousands. A recent check, for example, on their official MySpace music page alone counted nearly 50,000 visits to their page.
In the meanwhile, as though they’ve been in the music business for decades, Chelsea and Cameron have shrewdly built their professional team. Every professional knows that a good entertainment attorney is critical to success, so the sisters sought out one of the most prestigious industry attorneys in the country, Joel Katz of Atlanta. Katz presently represents many major recording artists, including Christina Aguilera, Sheryl Crow, Brooks and Dunn, and B.B. King, and handle legal work for such corporations as Time Warner, Time Warner Telecom, Coca Cola, and Clear Channel Entertainment.
With more then 55,000 fans dropping by their MySpace music page, it became clear that their most popular song on the playlist was “Cause and Effect,” a hard hitting and lively dance song containing complex melodies and harmonies, a hook to grab the attention of listeners, and lyrics that captures the dilemmas and spirit of today’s youth and young adults. They sent the single out to a select radio test market and successfully received air play in the U.S. and Canada. This response has resulted in the sisters becoming even more determined to take their careers to the top.
Chelsea, with multiple scholarships and a member of the National Honor Society, interrupted her college studies to focus on her professional career. Her sister Cameron, a senior in high school, also with honors, enrolled in a cyber school. Cameron’s decision allows her to finish high school, a goal she considers extremely important, but at the same time, she is able to find more time to work closely with Chelsea writing, rehearsing, and, lately, like her sister, replying to a growing mountain of fan emails and messages.
When singers and songwriters Chelsea and Cameron burst onto the music scene, it will seem like overnight success to some people, but the pop sisters have been living and breathing music most of their lives. Their family, friends, and fans know that it’s been the hard work and talent that got them this far. Lightning may strike twice for this duet, but the thunder that follows will be the driving beat and music setting the industry on fire. It is only a matter of time before Chelsea and Cameron explode onto the pop music scene. They are likely to become the next pop princesses at the top of the music charts, but one reporter declared, “Walt Disney would love their polite congeniality and sweet personalities,” qualities that seem to be missing among some divas.
